About the Author
![]()
Shirley Gholston Key, Ed.D. is a product of Manassas High School ('67) in Memphis, Tennessee. She left Manassas and attended Gustavus Adolphus College ('71), Texas Southern University ('82), and the University of Houston ('95). Whereas she did not make all A's and B's as she had in high school, she attributes her success in college to the expectations her teachers and principals had of her and her classmates' future. She was not only expected to graduate from Manassas and receive a Bachelors degree but she was taught to reach higher and to make a difference in society. Shirley carried and still carries that same great expectation into her classrooms in Texas and her college classes in Texas and Memphis. Wherever great expectations were sowed, greater were the achievements seen. Because so many of you have asked, "How did you do it?" she decided to write Greater the Expectations... Greater the Achievements! to share her experiences with you.
