About the Book About the Author Excerpts Catalogue Information About the Book
This little book provides us the opportunity to visit or perhaps re-visit the peace, beauty and wisdom of this unique protected place on one of Canada's Gulf Islands. Captured here in words and photographs, 'Medicine Beach', is an area including not just the wide rocky beach, but also a brackish marsh, home to many rare and endangered species, and a beautiful rocky upland with arbutus, fir and Garry oak. Shelley Easthope has lived in this area of Pender Island, for over fifteen years and describes her relationship with this place. A brief history, including the story of the community project to create a nature conservancy here and a brief description of the area and its' species, set the scene for the 'reflections'. These reflections are vignettes based on visits to the beach throughout the year and include insights into the living of a graceful daily life, drawn from these visits. Topics range from the rocky teeth protecting the shore, to the value of quiet contemplation of the sea, or the utility of the leaves and roots of a plant and our own need for roots to support us. Sprinkled with photographs and a few poems, the book provides a gentle introduction to this special place for those who have not yet visited, or a refreshing way to re-visit time and again, for those who count this place among their friends.
"Let the love, beauty, wisdom and healing found within the pages of Shelley Easthope's book bring peace to your soul." - best-selling authour of The Living Workplace, Ann Coombs
