The incredible story of an American soldier who spent one third of his military life as a full fledged student in the United States of America and post war Germany.

While studying at Weihenstefan Agriculture and Technical University in Freising, Germany, Joseph crosses paths with a beautiful Hungarian refugee, Maria. Along with countless other refugees, they had fled their native land to escape the dreaded Soviet army known for atrocities and brutality especially toward women.

Naturally, they fall in love only to be separated as Maria is forced to return to Hungary and Joe goes to Vienna as part of General Mark Clarks Honor Guard.

Years of separation follow and they lose touch with each other.

While repatriating Swabians, people of German ancestry, the American officers enlisted Maria's help as an interpreter. The Hungarian Secret Police accused her of being a spy and forced her to sign a document that she would spy for them against her fellow Hungarians. Maria agreed to their demands and right away escaped through the Iron Curtain.

While in Austria, Maria found work with the United States Ordnance and discovered that Canada had a refugee program that suited her needs. She arrived in Toronto as a live in maid and a few months later just walked across the border into Vermont and later into Massachusetts to reunite with her true love.

About the Author

Born in Leicester, Massachusetts. Joe grew up in the time of the Great Depression. Living on a small farm helped the family cope with the problems associated with the Depression.

Within two weeks , after graduation from High School. Joe entered the U.S. Army in July, 1943. Under the A.S.T.P. program he studied engineering at Manhattan College in New York City.

Participated in the Battle of Central Europe and immediately after studied at the Weihenstefan A&T. School in Freising, Germany.

After his discharge, graduated from Clark University with a B.A. degree in 1953. Joe entered the field of education and retired from active teaching in 1990.

Maria was born in the well known and beautiful wine region of Villany, Hungary.

After completing her school years. She worked at the railway station as a ticket agent. This income was supplemented by her skills as an accomplished seamstress.

In the year 1944, Maria fled as the Russian Army invaded Hungary. Maria survived a raid by British bombers in the Austrian City of Sopron by cowering in an air raid shelter.

Next year, fleeing the Russians once more she joined a small group of refugees in a barracks in Freising, Germany.

Returning to Hungary in 1946, she lived a normal life until the Hungarian Secret Police accused her of espionage. This Forced her to escape through the Iron Curtain into Yugoslavia, then Austria where she worked at the American Ordnance Center.

Maria, under the Canadian Refugee program entered Canada and a few months later crossed another border into the United States.

In 1950, Joe and Maria finally found happiness by marriage in Worcester, Massachusetts and living a less hectic life complete with children. Finally no more borders to cross as a refugee! Maria had reached her goal.
