About the Book
Set within the Native American Culture, Cherokee, Skin Walker is the third volume of a three-volume series about wild horses and Indians. The second volume, The Adventures of Cherokee, took him and his friend, Sunee across the Mississippi and to adventures beyond, as he sought the answer to the vision quest he was given in Volume 1, Grandfather.
Now the stallion is all alone in the young territory of Wyoming in the 1860's. He meets new friends, has new adventures and finally finds the answer to that important vision in this, the final book of the series. Older children will enjoy reading these stories and parents and grandparents will enjoy reading them to the younger children - and to themselves, as well. Good family reading for everyone.
Watch for Thunder on the Mountain another good horse story suitable for familes.
About the Author
Nancy Bender was born in Gladwin, Michigan to James and Eva bender in 1939. James worked on the C&O Railroad out of Saginaw and Eva was a schoolteacher, serving in several country schools. She has one sister, Dorothy living in White Cloud and one brother, Bud, deceased. The family lived on Spring Street.
Nancy got her first horse at the age of 7. She also began piano lessons at 7 ½. She loved cowboy and Indian books and movies, and called her first horse, Trigger. There were several horses between Trigger and Q-Tee, one of the last ones. But she is the little black mare most Gladwin folks will remember running home on her own, leaving Nancy alone downtown when the fire whistle went off one day. She was also the one tied up at parking meters on various days in front of Dewey Ogden’s grocery store or Capling’s Hardware.
Upon graduation, Nancy went to work for the Midland Daily News. She has held many interesting jobs, including working in the Pentagon for 13 months. She is retired from Florida Department of Transportation and claims, three children, one girl, Dawn, and two boys, Richard and Bill.
After living on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee for 8 years, she and her husband, Keith moved back to Florida and are currently living in Orange Park, FL, where Nancy has been writing for the Fleming Island Living (later sold and renamed Community Living) on a monthly basis. She now has time to devote to her first love writing.
Dabbling in writing for many years the first book to be self-published was, “Memories,” a biography about Eva Bender, her mother. The second book was a baby book of all sorts for cats, “Cats in A Cradle” The third book, “Little Miracle,” was started in Zephyrhills, FL while dreaming of a newspaper column. Later, when her articles were rejected by a local newspaper in Crossville, TN, she pledged these stories to God, if He would bless her attempt to publish “Grandfather.”
“Little Miracles,” sprang into being from that promise, opened to people in the community and churches to submit true miracle stories of their own, Tansi Community Church became the vehicle for publishing this wonderful book. The last little book was suggested by other folks who like to see their animal’s picture in print. It is called, “My Scripture Activity book for Memory Verses.” Folks from far and wide contributed cute animal pictures. Nancy researched Bible verses and paraphrased them to represent the photos. The accompanying page is blank for children to write in their current Sunday School memory verses, the date and draw a picture of their pet.
“Grandfather” was completed in Tennessee and “The Adventure of Cherokee” was started there. Both are currently available from Trafford Publishing Company. “Cherokee, Skin Walker,” is the third and final book of the three volume series. In this book Cherokee makes two new and special friends, and accomplishes the vision quest he received in the first book.
In addition to her fiction writing, she has received the President’s Award for Literary Excellence from the National Authors Registry for her poem, “God Bless America,” an Honorable Mention from Iliad Press for her poem “Up To Me” and is published in Today’s Famous Poems On the Wings of Pegasus, 2003 Edition. She has also written two Christian choruses for children entitled, “Who Can?” and “Psalm 100.”
She has recently toured five stated signing books, speaking to classes, of 4th, 5th, and 6th grader about how to write and make words into mind pictures, writing about what you know, research and the use of fiction vs. true facts. She visited libraries and bookstores, did book signings in her hometown and made contacts for future engagements.
Nancy plans to continue writing for the newspaper, as well as writing more animal fiction. She is available for radio/television interviews, school assemblies, libraries, church, political functions, and/or book fairs and other local functions.
She is currently seeking contributors to her upcoming book called, “God’s Little Miracles.” A complimentary copy of the book will be provided for anyone submitting a true story that is used for publication.
