Je sais que j'ai un cancer qui est très avancé, poursuivit-elle. Ce qui m'ennuie, c'est d'être obligée de prendre constamment des médicaments, je ne le supporte plus.

Armandi avait beau cacher son visage dans ses mains, Fabiola vit qu'il était mouillé de larmes. Ne pouvant plus se contenir, il passa ses mains dans ses cheveux, les empoigna et se lâcha, pleura, pleura, si fort qu'on pouvait l'entendre à l'extérieur de la chambre. Alors qu'il pleurait à gros sanglots, il sentit la main de Fabiola sur la sienne, puis sur ses cheveux. Elle lui caressa la tête en silence pendant un long moment.

Lorsqu'il leva son visage vers elle, il s'aperçut qu'elle pleurait aussi. Il la prit alors dans ses bras et la serra aussi fort qu'un soldat partant pour le front et faisant ses adieux à sa fiancée. Ils restèrent longtemps serrés l'un contre l'autre et finirent par s'endormir sur le lit étroit.

La semaine sembla assez courte à Armandi. Il passa tout son temps auprès de Fabiola. Il trouvait toujours qu'il pouvait faire mieux, faire plus. Néanmoins, l'état de santé de Fabiola resta stable pendant cette période. Ils s'amusèrent alors dans la propriété, commeils avaient l'habitude de le faire lorsqu'ils y vivaient tous ensemble, avant qu'ill aille s'installer au campus universitaire. Le soir venu, il se déguisait en magicien pour lui faire des tours de magie, et la distraire un peu.

Mais le ciel sembla ignorer les prières de la famille Brostani. La maladie avait trouvé un terrain fertile, elle se développa très rapidement au sein de la petite Fabiola.
