About the Book

Imagine surfing the Pacific on a giant sea turtle's shell, frolicking with polar bears in the Arctic or playing with penguins in Tierra del Fuego. Olivier & Joaquin To The Rescue! is the story of two brothers' magical journey from one end of the Americas to the other to save the penguins after a polar bear asks them to take on the rescue mission. This fully colour-illustrated book by an award-winning artist shows Joaquin and Olivier making friends with pelicans, whales and crocodiles along their way to the tip of South America. Written in English and French, the story is as entertaining as it is educational for children and parents alike with themes of cooperation, mutuality and discovery.

What better way to stimulate your child's curiosity about the world and nature than through a beautifully illustrated book of fantasy and adventure featuring world renown sites like Manaus in Brazil, Galapagos in Ecuador or Churchill in Canada?

About the Author

Gilbert Le Gras is the father of Joaquin and Olivier, who are dual Canadian and Argentine citizens. Olivier is well on his way to becoming a world traveller, having been to Manitoba, Oregon and Tierra del Fuego. Joaquin, meanwhile, is a natural-born explorer. Gilbert has worked as a reporter for almost two decades, almost all of which as a foreign correspondent with Reuters.

His first book, The New New World examines the politics, markets, infrastructure, commodities and demographics of South America's Mercosur and Andean Community trade blocs.

Born and raised in Manitoba, Gilbert has reported out of 14 countries in the Americas, Western Europe and South Asia. He currently covers the World Bank Group, International Monetary Fund and Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, D.C. Gilbert swims, sails and scuba dives with a particular fondness for underwater shipwrecks. In his spare time he has volunteered in hospices, with Big Brothers and built housing for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka.

Katharina Schopohl is a visual artist born in Manitoba but living in Quebec. For the past two years she has been working as a free-lance artist, specializing in murals and faux-fini effects in commercial and private residences.

This is the third book she has illustrated, though the first to be created in collaboration with Gilbert. The previous two books were written by grade two students at a local school and a limited edition with Katharina's illustrations were printed. She is also involved in other educational and teaching projects with a variety of age groups. Most notably, she developed, over a 13 year period, an extensive art program at a community centre for people with mental health problems.

In her free time Katharina creates acrylic paintings inspired by the people and events around her, as well as fanciful hand-painted wood objects. She has won several awards recently for her work, including two prestigious artist's choice awards.
