About the Book About the Author Excerpts Catalogue Information About the Book
I have been asked why I wrote this book and who will read it. Three reasons for writing come to mind and these reasons may also produce readers interested in further dialogue.
1. In my association with other Christians along the way, I have experienced a use of scripture that better represents an abuse of scripture. Where belief and practice is derived and supported by the use of favorite "proof" texts, the result is the multiplicity of denominations and sects that we have in Christendom. The reliance on "proof" texts is itself the result of ascribing to every verse of scripture, an authority that scripture itself does not justify. To be honest with scripture is to appreciate the variety of human response that by consensus has been accepted and incorporated as Christian Scripture. Scripture has authority, but it is an authority that followers of Jesus of Nazareth have bestowed upon it through the centuries of its influence.
2. I wish to call Christians to account for the belief that God's Spirit is as active today as in the past, and is active in the lives of all the people of the world. If Christianity is a lively faith then it must be subject to discussion and translation according to the challenges of life Along The Way. I am not claiming that my experience is unique, only that I wish to participate with others in a lively discussion of the significance and use of the scripture. Nor am I interested in discrediting Christianity by pointing to its humanity.
3. The unity of Christendom is an obvious and embarrassing disunity. This book is directed to all Christians who are serious about maintaining a continuing struggle with scripture, tradition and history. Understanding The Way It Was is essential to reforming The Way It Is and I dedicate my analysis to the struggle for faithfulness and unity and the mission of Christianity to the world.
