About the Author

Emily T. Fisher entered the medical field as an RN 18 years ago. She has watched the medical industry change over the years but one thing hasn’t changed: “Nurses don’t take care of themselves.”

Balancing family, career, and studies, Fisher received her Bachelor of Science in holistic studies in 2001. Fisher’s experience in long-term-care management, dating back to 1991, led her to obtain her Massachusetts Administrator’s License in September 2003. In April 2005, she completed her certification as a Board Certified Holistic Nurse. She also has conducted classes as a Reiki instructor since 2001.

Throughout her career, Fisher has been dedicated to educating and inspiring nurses and nursing staff. In 2002, she piloted an educational program called ADVANCE. This program taught staff alternate ways to approach problems in the workplace. Staff who participated in this program became more team-oriented and reported increased job satisfaction. Staff reported that their residents were calmer, when they applied their new approach. Residents felt staff were more compassionate and attentive to their needs.

In 2003, Fisher developed the Whole Health Model, a holistic approach to resident care. As Clinical Services Coordinator, she launched this model in six nursing homes. Praised by state surveyors for outcomes, the model was implemented in all 17 nursing homes in the system.
