About the Author
![]()
Nina Ieraci DiPaula has taught in the Commack Public Schools on Long Island for 29 years and served as English Department Chair in the junior high and subsequent middle school in that district for 20 years. She began writing in the summer of 1980 when she enrolled in the Long Island Writing Project. This experience changed her entire approach to personal writing as well as the teaching of the subject. She became a facilitator of ideas rather than a red pencil dictator of subjects and verbs. The approach paid off with the initiation of writing contests and school publications containing some of the most pure, imaginative and delightful writing by sixth, seventh and eighth graders. After her retirement from Commack, she taught for two semesters at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida, and upon her return to New York fllled a position as English teacher at St. Anthony's High School in South Huntington, Long Island which continued until her last retirement in 1999. She now resides in Coram, Long Island where she continues to write, attempting to capture the whimsical nature of children.
