About the Book About the Author Excerpts Catalogue Information About the Book
Both letters and recollections, some humorous, some tragic are used to describe his military obligations commencing with induction into the Army, basic and artillery training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, combat experience in Korea and a brief visit to Japan.
Following honorable discharge from the military he recounts actions preceding and following his proposal and marriage to Marlene, his wife of over 50 years. While reminiscing about the births and school experiences of their two sons, he reflects on a number of rather comical incidents while a Little League baseball manager.
The author incorporates published letters, some of his conservative "Starboard Soliloquy" newspaper columns and original speeches to explain his political inclination, commentary and activism. He explains factors leading to his participation as a founding member of the New York State Conservative Party in 1962 and subsequent involvement with the Richmond County Republican Party on Staten Island in New York City.
Finally, he reviews incidents leading to a decision to retire and move to an adult village in New Jersey. Once settled, he explains both the beneficial aspects and depressing nature of living in a retirement community.
The author's recollections and interpretations of life provide interesting reading for those who witnessed events during the same period of time. For those of a current generation, More Than a Conservative depicts aspects of life through the eyes of a New York City native who exhibited rebellious characteristics comparable to many of today's non-believers.
About the Author
![]()
Born, raised and educated in New York City public schools, Lawrence (Larry) Katz relates experiences from 1930 to the present by tracing his life, parental influence and events prior to, during and following World War II. He examines the primary origins of two life-long advocacies, baseball and model aviation plus he provides interesting insights into teenage life during a non-technical family oriented previous generation.
As a student in Brooklyn College, alias the "Little Red Schoolhouse", he rebelled and refused to accept liberal-left, pro-Communist brainwashing and became a staunch, dedicated Jewish Conservative. This manifested itself into both anti-Communist and issue-oriented conservative activism.
