About the Book Rave Reviews About the Author Excerpts Catalogue Information

About the Book

The book is based on a true story of Henrietta, a Bantam hen who just wondered into an auto shop one day and has stayed almost 12 years. The author met her while in the auto shop, having car repairs done. She realized this was no ordinary chicken, she watched Herietta perform her unusual and intelligent antics and heard her television debut.

Readers will be amazed with henrietta's adventures and her courage. the book also portrays a very loving, kind considerate owner of the shop (Dan). The excellent, professional photographs and text portray the love between these two, as Dan trims her toenails, puts a splint on a broken toe, and wipes her beak when she has a cold. He even lets her "talk" on the telephone to shop customers who know her.

Children of ALL ages will relate to the things that happen to Henrietta, including getting lost and found again. "Henrietta the Guard Chicken" presents an unusual, winning combination of an auto shop, a pet Bantam hen, and the man who loves and cares for her. A child who may not have had such a loving, caring role model as Dan is to Henrietta, will surely know what love is when they read this delightful book.

Rave Reviews

Move over Minerva Louise! "Henrietta the Guard Chicken" is already a CLASSIC in my heart, and she is destined for greatness.

FROM The Children's School of Excellence:
I think it is a wonderful story. When I first heard it, I couldn't stop thinking about it all week. I thought more children should read it.

- Haylee R. Hawkins, age 9

I really like the story! It is very funny. I would like you to make another one, please.

-Shiny Morist, age 9

You've heard it said that truth is stranger than fiction. And every once in a while, it is more wonderful too. That's the case with this charming real-life tale of Henrietta, a Bantam chicken who walked into an auto shop 12 years ago and decided to stay.

- Barbara Lloyd McMichael, "The Olympian" newspaper
syndicated book reviewer (The Bookmonger)

For those looking for an escape from the X-rated world of the 21st century, Iris Moore and Henrietta offer an engaging, charming, nostalgic alternative. This is a story so unusual that both children and adults will be fascinated by this pet chicken's intelligent behavior.

About the Author

Iris-Arla Moore is a former children's librarian who lives in the northwestern United States. She enjoys writing poetry, books, articles and songs, which she also loves to sing. This is her first children's picture book, but she is sure it is not her last. Hopefully, there will be more adventures of Henrietta, who has already traveled about 50,000 miles, and rides the horses with or without her keeper, Dan.
