The first volume teaches the twelve major scales and the treble and bass clefs, in addition to keyboard basics and an introduction to rhythm, intervals, and chords. This volume teaches the twelve minor scales and goes into further detail in ties coverage of rhythm, intervals, and chords. It lays the foundation for learning harmony, which is the key focus of the volume which follows.

In addition to this series, Deborah Jamini is the author of Harmony and Composition: Basics to Intermediate. She received an MFA from Queen's College and a BM from the Mannes College of Music, where she has taught music theory and harmony since 1985. As a pianist and singer, she has recorded seven compact discs with various ensembles. Awards include a Prix d'Excellence and Fellowship at the Ecoles d'Arts Américaines in France, and Artists International Award in New York City, and grants from the Mannes College and the New School.
