God Is

by Morris T. Johnstone

186 pages; quality trade paperback (softcover); catalogue #06-0557; ISBN 1-4120-8801-1; US$15.61, C$17.95, EUR12.82, £8.98

This is a book for the thinker who has trouble with "believe and be saved" or bliss or blister thinking. God is love.

About the Book

The opening concept is that "nothing comes from nothing". Therefore God must exist. There are arguments pro and con.

This book examines concepts of God and suggests that like the blind men who went to see the elephant we know very little and often claim to know nearly all about God. It examines the man made or anthropomorphic God. It also looks at the ideas of other major world religions and seeks for common ground. It discusses principles for peacfull co-existence.

The concept of specialness is examined. It seems that many religionists think that they are special and have the inside track with the Divine. What wise Earthly Father favours one child over the rest? Even so identifying God as Father limits and therefore is a confining concept. It suggests that primitive people understood power and Fathers and kings had power so these metaphors were used to describe God. It asks if modern civilization can be satisfied with such limiting and inadequate metaphors. While science and technology have advanced concepts of the Divine have remained static. Therefore many thinkers have written the whole thing off.

The last chapter is in the form of the writers personal journey. Each chapter is complete with footnotes.

About the Author

Morris T. Johnstone was born in 1929 in a small town hospital and grew up on a small dairy farm. His mother died when he was ten, and his father was left with Morris and a younger brother. The boys were taught to think for themselves — not to accept any story that did not make sense.

Morris married at age 23 and lived on the farm for several years before moving to the city of Edmonton, Alberta. He delivered milk door-to-door for several years, tried his hand at retailing and worked as a correction officer before settling at the University heating and power plant.

While on the farm a son was born to them by C-section and another was hydro-cephalic and died at age of three days. After they moved to the city another son was born. He was an RH baby and had a tought start in life. He and his wife were divorced after 11 years of marriage.

Several years later he re-married and she died from cancer leaving him alone again. He married again and this marriage lasted and ended in divorce after 22 years. He is now married to a widow whose marriage lasted for 51 years ending when her husband passed on.

Morris took early retirement from the heating and power plant in 1987 and began an extensive search for meaning and purpose. His search included becoming a Life Skills Coach; taking the Pursuit of Excellence series and the examination of different theological concepts. He is an ordained minister and took training as a chaplin in a major hospital.

He currently lives in Lloydminster Alberta Canada.
