About the Book

From Here To The Streets is a manual written to provide soon to be released prison inmates, convicted felons, or anybody else with skills and information they will need to find and maintain gainful employment, understand small business ownership, utilize Federal Bonding, and established or repair their personal credit.

The book itself is laid out as a flexible formatted step by step course manual, but can also stand alone as a single user self help book. There are tips for interviewing, a special section for using and promoting websites, and an overview of mortgages and real estate ownership. There are also tips for planning lessons, forms for use, and useful sample documents in every lesson section and chapter.

This book contains current information and also includes many points of contact for learning more about the various resources referenced. It was developed and written by someone who personally understands the many challenges and obstacles that people seeking employment face, especially those who are re-entering society. Over 90% of all incarcerated persons will be released back into the population and will need jobs, housing and opportunities to succeed in life. This course manual/self help book is dedicated to them and also the teachers and facilitators who will use its materials to help those individuals improve their lives.

The author, Joseph L. Chiapetta Jr., is a convicted felon serving a prison sentence in Arizona for white collar theft. His articles on Pre-Release and Employability have been published in Prison Living Magazine and The Fortune News.

About the Author

Joseph L. Chiappetta was raised in Dauphin, Pennsylvania, near the state capitol, Harrisburg. He was an only child whose parents gave him an eclectic and diverse upbringing. By his ninth birthday, he was studying geology, astronomy, archaeology, and history in a special youth workshop at the William Penn Memorial Museum (now the Pennsylvania State Museum) under the direction of the curators and research staff. This continued for several years during which time he also studied judo, karate, and numerous outdoor sports and activities. At age 15, Joe had won his junior high school science awards and was participating in martial arts demonstrations throughout the Central Dauphin School District and all over central Pennsylvania. In his senior year, Joe was serving on the senior class council, doing a magic act in the yearly talent show, and working at Commonwealth National Bank as part of a student work program. He later took the Army entrance exam and scored the highest grade possible.

Following that part of his life, Joe took an interest in small business ownership and successfully opened and operated his own karate dojo, limousine service, computer sales company, and many other sales-based ventures. During these years, Joe’s life took many turns in the wrong direction. Despite his many opportunities and skills, he turned to white collar crime and eventually ended up in and out of prison. During his current Arizona sentence he finally found a new calling: helping others. He started to work as a teacher’s aide and helped his fellow inmates obtain high school equivalency diplomas. Since then, he has helped hundreds of students achieve this goal. A prison teacher saw Joe’s potential and gave him an opportunity to assist her with an employability class. By early 2004, he had drafted an updated version of this course for his Unit Deputy Warden.

The experience has changed Joe’s life as well. Redirecting his energy and talents towards helping others rather than taking from them has put his own life back on track after 20 years of personal failures. Joe is currently enrolled in three colleges studying business administration, emergency management, entrepreneurial development, and computer concepts. He is also continuing to develop his pre-release and employability course into a full range transitional program with the help of his teacher at Central Arizona College. He also studies under Professor Richard Shelton in a creative writing workshop. At his current facility, Joe is employed as an administrative clerk and substance abuse programs facilitator.
