About the Book About the Author Excerpts

About the Book

One can live in Oregon for several years and never get to know an Oregon that is rich in colorful history. In this time and place most people do not stop to seek the history of the Beaver State. Concerns are focused upon the present and it takes most of one's energy just to prepare for the responsibilities of today. The Past? Whatever it may be, it is just that-the past.

But if one has the time and inclination to look backward, history can be entertaining and illuminating if one remembers that history was written by people and sometimes people do the craziest things. Oregon has had its share of "crazies" and that makes the yesterdays of the state almost laughable. But there are many heroes as well to strike an interesting balance between sanity and historical reality.

Oregon enjoys a reputation today as a progressive and liberal state. For instance it sponsored this nation's first doctor assisted suicide program yet it will not allow its citizens to pump their own gas. It holds on to the names of crazy people and glorifies Indian renegades while at the same time it works towards eliminating the word "squaw" from its topography. It is a state with many contrasting and parallel practices that make it almost an enigma to some.

One cannot accurately label Oregon nor claim that Oregon is directly this or that for Oregonians are fiercely independent and they can thank their pioneer ancestors for that. But Oregonians are no better or no worse than any other state members. Thank goodness though that Oregonians are known for their sense of humor and can appreciate humor wherever they may find it including their own history.

In this book Just Another Day In Paradise - No - Oregon portions of Oregon's history are reexamined and some of the dark historical secrets and moments are brought to the light for the reader to digest and to chuckle now and then Oregon is an unusual place and offers much to a student of the past and is an exciting place to live. Here the author shares some of his notable Oregon experiences. The reader is warned to come prepared with a good sense of humor. Wherever people gather for a noble cause there is bound to be laughter for even the best of intentions are tainted with imperfection.
