About the Book About the Author Excerpts About the Book
Ideally we all love our parents and would do anything for them. Unfortunately life does not make it that simple. Time and distance separates and scatters families to all corners of the world.
My parents found my little corner and after retiring and traveling they settled nearby. Even though my family never discussed aging or dieing, I could tell something was happening to my parents. I had absolutely no idea how we aged so significantly or approached the end of our lives, but being the closest caregiver for my parents I had to face the facts and figure it all out on my own.
You cannot stop the downward spiral of aging. You will ask yourself over and over and over again, "What happened?" Everyday some more of what used to be your parents is going to be lost for good. Your parents will be in total denial of needing help and may become aggressive because the aging war is out of their control. And despite your best intentions you will probably cause huge disruptions to your parents' lives with choices you have made for them.
You will not believe the chaos that comes with the unknown of fading from this life! Your strength during Eldercaring will develop from protecting and caring for your loved ones. My book is uniquely my story, but can be experienced by anyone having parents. It has been written and offered as support for all caregivers.
About the Author
Barbara Harvey Huckaba was the second of the three daughters born to her parents, Margaruite and Howard Harvey. Life couldn't have been more typical or ordinary growing up a Harvey girl. Childhood began in Monterey, California and with moves within California about every five years; Barbara finished her schooling in the Napa Valley. Barbara learned she had "gypsy feet" and really enjoyed every move her family made. Each change was like a window opening to the world and Barbara absorbed and surveyed and contemplated each and everything that came her way.
A good part of Barbara's life was spent being a single parent to her own three children. She credits her ability to persevere as a single parent to her childhood of many changes. It taught her to adapt within an ever changing world and allowed her to endure and conquer life's daily challenges.
When Barbara was faced with the slow downfall of her parents lives it was again her ability to adapt that made her Eldercaring possible. Her life and her world changed just as much as her parents lives did. And from the very beginning she searched for a book that could guide her through this unknown and scary territory.
Barbara's book was written in loving memory of her mother in hopes that your journey through parental Eldercaring will be as smooth and as painless as possible.
