"...when I passed it and was given my new Master's License I figured I had finally achieved the end of my career by rising from a lowly Apprentice Seaman to Master of any steam or motor vessel of any gross tonnage sailing the seas..."

About the Book
I am retired from the Federal Civil Service and also from the Masters, Mates and Pilots. In 1945 at the end of the Second World War I joined the "Fighting Merchant Marine" as an Apprentice Seaman and was trained at Sheepshead Bay Maritime Training Station in New York.
I was shipped out to the Army Transportation Service and was drafted during the Korean War and after returned to sea. I became licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard and acquired a Master's License. In 1973 I retired from what had become known as the Military Sealift Command and then shipped out with the Masters, Mates and Pilots. In 1980 I was asked to become a Union Official and I did, then retired from the sea in 1991. Afterwards, the new MM&P President asked me to become a Consultant, and I did, leaving at nearly the end of the century when I had believed I had trained my replacement.
The superliner United Sates was built at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., where construction began in 1949. Today, it is the last of the swift passenger liners on the Atlantic and is lashed to a Philadelphia pier.
