About the Book About the Author Excerpts

About the Book

I wrote this autobiography so my sons would know something about my life before I married their mother. The names of places and well-known public figures are as accurate as my memory permits. I have changed other names to protect the identities of the persons involved, alive or dead.

I have changed some details to "make the story believable", since truth is often stranger than fiction. I have changed other details in order to "never let the truth stand in the way of a good story".

This autobiography consists of three parts. The Backbone chapters are arranged in a conventional way, going from birth to marriage. This leaves room for my two sons to write their own autobiographies from this point on.

The Sidebar chapters appear next, arranged in alphabetical order. I felt the "backbone" would have been unwieldy if it had incorporated all the "sidebar" subjects and events.

The Short Story chapters appear last, also in alphabetical order. Most of them are previously published short stories based on actual events in my life, and appeared in Potpourri, a now defunct literary publication.

About the Author

I was born in 1924, severely allergic to milk, nuts, and eggs. I led a fairly normal life in spite of this. I moved from Arkansas to Missouri to New York to Indiana and finally to Texas. I was never in one place long enough to make and keep friends until I reached Texas. I went to the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a mechanical engineering degree in 1944. I then spent two years as a petty officer in the Navy. My first real engineering work was in hydroelectric plants on the Colorado River above Austin. My first quarter century was certainly full of life.

It was time to fall in love, marry and raise a family. That is another another story, perhaps another book.
