A Besieged Church: An Overview From the Pew of an Ordinary Catholic

by N. Gamil Dawes

218 pages; quality trade paperback (softcover); catalogue #06-1414; ISBN 1-4120-9658-8; US$17.35, C$19.95, EUR14.25, £9.98

How did the Catholic Church become inundated with serious troubles as it is today? Are you curious of what the causes were, and how they infiltrated the Church?

About the Book

Pope Benedict XVI has mentioned that the Catholic Church must return to its authentic teachings and practices - in a way admitting that something is awry. The clergy can not be expected to point out what the problems are without appearing insubordinate to their bishop. Most common Catholics received no warnings from the pulpit, and only hints from certain quarters or events; separate proofs from books or newspapers.

There is a need to disclose the forces that have infiltrated the Church for the last 40 years - the misinterpretations of the Vatican II documents, the rampage of liberal theologians, the incursion of feminism - and how they affected the Church's teachings. Some supernatural events - apparitions, visions, etc... - that may have warned about these calamities should also be covered. The common Catholics will then be better informed, and can be wary of probable misguided influences, while keeping themselves open to the orthodox teachings for which they hunger. Knowing the problem is already half of the solution. Catholics may rally to the Church's side in these difficult times.

With the Pope's call to the Faithful Remnant, the information about our beleaguered Church should inspire the regular Catholics to desire to cooperate with the Pope's agenda - that of re-catechizing the common faithful. Their curiosity might make them study their Faith more assiduously, and they will learn the Truth that will set them free.

About the Author

The author is a textile engineer by profession, and writing this book came about as a result of an awareness of how today's Catholics are uninformed and not catechized.

Religious reading materials have always interested the author, a minimal, good enough Catholic, until an inspiring event touched her.

In 1997, she had the bewildering experience, along with three other people, of receiving the gift of "hearing" from the Holy Spirit. The happening was contrary to the author's scientific training, and was difficult to assimilate initially. After the event, the four recipients, who were of different gender and age, started hearing very clearly most of the homilies, readings and talks. That event took place while they were attending a Prayer Group (The Fountain of Love and Mercy of the United Hearts of Jesus and Mary) led by Lynn Geronimo.

The author wants to show gratitude to the Lord by concentrating on the spiritual dimensions of life: attending Mass often and getting involved with religious (non-social) activities. She decided to retire early and progressed unhindered in her quest. She met quite a large number of Catholics in the process, and recognized the need of sharing her knowledge of the Church.

She now lives in the outskirts of Montreal with her retired husband. Their two grown children are both married with their own families.

Reviews

"Extremely well presented and I do hope it 'falls' into the hands of the many who are so much in need of a solid, clear and faithful explication of Catholic teaching and the Church Tradition."

Deacon Gerald Foley, Pointe-Claire Quebec, Canada

"I think every Catholics should read this book, that is, those who realize the Church is divine AND human. The author, Norma Dawes, does not hesitate to write about the dangers lurking, and of some of the sad prevailing situation. It may surprise and shock some, certainly it leads the reader more informed, understanding and hopeful."

Caroline Groulx, Montreal Quebec, Canada

"The book gives a clear review of many changes and difficulties experienced by the Church over the past generation. It expresses many of the frustrations and questions of many Catholics, putting into words much of what they feel. There are numerous suggestions for Catholics in facing (the future) with a very positive and optimistic frame of mind."

Jean-Paul Laniel (Permanent Deacon), Pierrefonds Quebec, Canada
