About the Book About the Author Excerpts

About the Book

This is a series of anecdotes from Dr. Truong's medical practice, covering a wide range of human experiences.

While all the stories are centered around the doctor-patient relationship, the book is far from a scientific work. Rather, it deals with the human spirit and how it fares in the face of adversity. Through remarkable life stories punctuated by lively and thought-provoking conversations, the author takes the reader to various times and places, meeting both the graceful and the ugly sides of human faces. The reader in turn finds himself in the middle of tragedy and chaos: in an overcrowded emergency room, in a tiny apartment where an elderly woman prepares herself for a lonely New Year, in Normandy shortly after D-Day or in a Ba Ria prison, just northeast of Saigon.

These are more than mere medical anecdotes, however. As patients open up with their feelings and emotions, Dr. Truong looks within himself, reliving his own experiences and sharing with the reader his own inner challenges. Rarely does a physician reveal so much about himself; in so doing, this doctor becomes a real person, one whose self-doubts and fears serve only to illuminate the sensitive, compassionate individual who has healed so many others.

In the end, this look from "behind the white coat" is an invitation to ponder once more on who we are and how we live, to join a rich journey of self-discovery.

About the Author

Minh D. Truong was born in Da Nang, Viet Nam, in 1964 and grew up in Saigon. In 1979, four years after the unification of Viet Nam under the socialist rule, Minh and his family left the country by boat in search of freedom, disguised as ethnic Chinese. He spent four months in a refugee camp on Pulau Buton, Indonesia, before coming to Montreal, Canada, where he subsequently undertook and completed his medical studies at McGill University.

After two years of residency in Family Medicine at the Jewish General Hospital, he practiced in the emergency room of a 250-bed hospital for 10 years. In late 2004, he moved on to a home care program at a Montreal CLSC (Community Health Care Centre). He also has a private practice in an ethnically diverse neighbourhood of central Montreal.
