A burned-out Detective from Chicago relocates to an affluent California community where he is forced to deal with his past and his prejudices while solving a high profile murder.

About the Book
Take a burned-out Detective from the poorest section of Chicago, relocate him to an affluent California community where the richest, most powerful resident has been murdered, and what do you have? Baptism by Fire - A Ted Peters Mystery, the first in a new series by Arlene Harman.
Lt. Ted Peters' dream of quiet recuperation turns into a nightmare when Adrietta Bay's most beloved citizen, Dr. Jonathan Ponder is found dead at Ponder's Retreat. For reasons he can't fathom, Ted has been assigned to head up the investigation. His previous experiences with the wealthy class have left a bitter taste in his mouth and a chip on his shoulder. To make matters worse, his team resents him and cooperation is at a minimum.
The only bright spot in his new situation is Margo Fraser, the local Medical Examiner. She proves to be very knowledgeable as well as beautiful. Could there be a future there? Before he can find out, circumstances arise that could destroy not only their relationship but also his position in the community.
During the course of the investigation, he uncovers evidence that points to someone in the Department. Lt. Ted Peters is forced to wade through a host of attitudes, false clues, death threats, and Adrietta Bay's own way of doing things.
His personal life is just as unnerving. In addition to dealing with bouts of jealousy, he comes face-to-face with elements of his past that he is trying desperately to forget. And if that isn't enough, Connie, a determined female, has worked her way into his life.
Is it any wonder he has come to view his first case in Adrietta Bay as a baptism by fire? The question is, will he survive?
About the Author
Arlene Harman lives in California with her husband, Jack. The native Californian was an avid reader before she started first grade. By the time she was in fourth grade she was sneaking her parents' Agatha Christie novels. Finally, at the age of twelve, her parents decided she was old enough to read such novels and she relished getting to read them again. With a life-long love for mysteries, it's no surprise that she chose that as her writing genre.
