Take a glimpse of Alzheimer's disease through the eyes of a child...

About the Book

The deep bond and unconditional love between Little Bear and her grandma, who has Alzheimer's disease, is beautifully expressed in the simple words of a child.

Little Bear shares fond memories of her Grandma Nellie Tom before Alzheimer's disease began to slowly take control. Little Bear cherishes those rare times when her beloved Grandma Nellie Tom, now in the advanced stages of the disease, lets her know with a simple smile, "I'm still here and I still love you very much".

Grandma Nellie Tom will touch the hearts of all ages, especially those whose loved ones have personally been affected by Alzheimer's disease. Our hope and prayer is that this simple picture book will show the importance of honoring and imputing dignity to those afflicted by this misunderstood disease.

With a little child-like faith and lots of unconditional love, "The Long Goodbye" can be a more tranquil transition for the Alzheimer's patient, as well as sweet memories for the caregiver, family, and friends.

About the Author

Susan Trafford Martin is the mother of three grown children and one granddaughter. With a long family history of Alzheimer's disease, she felt compelled to write a book to remind families and friends of Alzheimer's patients that the AD patient is still present — not only in body, but, also in mind to varying degrees. This author's three-year-old granddaughter inspired the idea of writing a children's book regarding this subject. Observing the deep connection between her granddaughter and her mom, who is in the late stages of Alzheimer's disease, was the true inspiration for this book.

Kristi Ruhman co-authored Grandma Nellie Tom, along with her mom. Kristi and her husband, Brooks, have one three-year-old daughter, Tinleigh Faith. She is an advocate for the Alzheimer's Association and is very active in promoting Alzheimer's awareness and education. In 2005 she authored a proclamation declaring June as Alzheimer's Awareness Month in her home state of Arkansas, signed by Governor Mike Huckabee. Her nonprofit organization, "Bear In Mind" serves as a road map in directing the families of Alzheimer's patients to various sources of information regarding the many different aspects of dealing with the disease.

Buddy Martin provided the artwork for Grandma Nellie Tom and is married to the author, Susan Trafford Martin. He is a devoted and loving husband, father, and 'Papa'. Buddy is a full-time employee of the Arkansas National Guard. He enjoys singing with his bluegrass gospel band at civic functions and churches across the state of Arkansas.
