Crepe Paper Memories

A story of growing up the youngest of nine children in a small town, not unlike thousands other small towns throughout the United States during the 1940's and 1950's.

About the Book

In 2004, when the author’s husband became seriously ill, Katherine knew she needed something to occupy the long hours which, by the seriousness of her husband’s illness, forced her to be almost as housebound as he. A formerly very active person, suddenly her days and nights were spent mainly inside the walls of their home.

To help fill the hours that were becoming increasingly lonelier and lonelier, the author first tried writing short stories. But after a few chapters, she would lose interest in the topic and attempt a different story line.

It dawned on her one day that she should write about her own life…where she came from, her early years and how she met the man that she was now watching slowly slip away. She realized that this would possibly be of interest to no one but her children and grandchildren, and perhaps their children after them, but they might find it a lot of fun to read. After all, she reasoned, who would not want to know more about their parents and their grandparents? What was their childhood like? What were they thinking and planning when they were growing up, reaching adolescence and finally adulthood? She knew writing it would be interesting to her and certainly knew the character in the storyline very well. So with all this in mind, Katherine sat down at her computer and began to put some sort of order to her growing years.

Finally she had something constructive to do to occupy the many long days and nights while working near her husband’s bedroom where she could hear the sounds of his snoring as he slept for longer periods of time each day as he became progressively weaker. Thus, Crepe Paper Memories was created mostly to the sounds of his silence.

About the Author

Katherine (Kathy) Taylor Doe was born in West Carthage NY, the youngest of ten children, and has lived all of her life in Watertown, NY.

She holds two part time jobs – one as an adjunct computer instructor, teaching classes in the Continuing Education Department of the local community college, and as an office aide to a New York State Assemblyman.

The book Crepe Paper Memories was initially begun as a family history to her children and grandchildren and ended up being a tribute to her late husband, Richard L. Doe.
