About the Book
The white oaks mansion had been home to the Ellison family since before the civil war. The family had been host to many dinners and parties until the war came to their door. In the last days of the civil war the house had been taken over to house Yankee officers. It was during these historic nine days that life changed forever. Jennie the mistress of the house fell in love with a Yankee captain by the name of Travis Kent who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. What had happened to him was never discovered. Jennie died an unhappy soul one-year later.
One hundred and thirty years later Jennie*s descendants are being plagued by some unusual events. They invite a newspaper reporter from Lancaster to their home to document the bizarre events in hope of laying the ghosts to rest. On her arrival Maria falls under the spell of the old mansion. It does not take her long to realize that something out of the ordinary is taking place. If wet footprints that lead to nowhere and rebel soldiers being chased out of the woods by blue coated soldiers is evidence of restless spirits.
After a few days Maria has a dream that she is a member of the household during the fateful nine days when the pontoon bridge that was constructed across the Catawba River caved in and separated the army. After in was rebuilt the army passed through the village. Leaving disaster in its wake. Maria awakes from her dream then Jennie*s long lost diary is found and when the fate of captain Kent is revealed the ghosts are appeased.
