Daddy, I'll Bake You a Chocolate Cake

by Mabel Ditch Hayes; Illustrated by Nicole Bateman

26 pages; Saddle stitched; illustrated children's book; catalogue #06-2671; ISBN 1-4251-0913-6; US$12.78, C$14.70, EUR10.50, £7.35

Whimsical children's picture book about an animal-loving little girl and her indulging father. Colorful illustrations make learning to count fun. Predictability allows children to read along.

About the Book

A young girl finds that her father will give her a pink, prancing pig, if she will just bake him a chocolate cake. If she bakes two chocolate cakes, she can have a kind kangaroo. She offers to bake an additional cake for each animal that she requests. Soon she has a menagerie, but Daddy has a bellyache and just cannot eat anymore cake. She has a plan though to help Daddy get over the bellyache and all of her newly acquired friends pitch in to help.

The colorful cakes will help preschoolers learn to count to ten while the vivid illustrations will introduce then to several whimsical animals, including a counting toucan, a marching mouse, a musical raccoon and several more. The repetitious rhymes encourage preschool children to "read" along.

This is sure to be a hit with teachers, parents, and children as it teaches the magic of imagination and the fun of rhyme and alliteration. Daddy, I’ll Bake You a Chocolate Cake is a book that will be read over and over again at home and in classrooms.

About the Author

Mabel Ditch Hayes is a former director of an adult and family literacy program at a community college in the Midwestern United States. She enjoys cooking, reading, writing, and country living. This is her first children's picture book, but definitely not her last.

During her years as a literacy director, she recognized the importance of adults and children reading together. She wants to encourage this activity by adding to the collection of good children’s literature that helps both parents and children appreciate the magic of reading together.

To further the family literacy cause, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of her books will support literacy programs sponsored by Lutheran Social Services of Illinois.
