George's Best Football Game

by Farah Waye

34 pages; Saddle stitched; illustrated; children's book; catalogue #06-2753; ISBN 1-4251-0994-2; US$16.42, C$16.42, EUR11.22, £8.48

This is a fun, colourful picture book for young children. Varied characters from George's favourite book come to life and play the BEST game of football ever.

About the Book

The game we know in the UK as 'football' is often referred to as 'soccer' in many other countries.

George loves playing football. But, today he can't find anyone to play football with. At his grandparents' suggestion he settles for a cosy afternoon with them reading his favourite traditional nursery rhymes. George then dozes off and finds himself inside the pages of these traditional tales. He meets the contemporary version of characters such as Little Miss Muffet, Old Mother Hubbard, and Little Jack Horner, to name but a few. George rounds them up and organises a great game of five-a-side football. Goals are scored, the whistle blows... and George wakes up to find it was all a dream!

OR, was it?! That mouse running up the grandfather clock is for real!

The objective of this fun, colourful book is to encourage children's imagination to 'run wild', to fantasize about something they're passionate about and to realise that dreamscan be very entertaining. Here, football is 'key'...and most children love playing or watching football. From two players up, from a backyard to a football pitch, it's possible for children generally to engage in an exhilirating game of football whatever their language, their culture, their colour, their creed, or even their level of skill. In football there are no barriers.

George's Best Football Game introduces simple dialogue to a young audience and uses repetitive phrases (e.g. "football another day perhaps?") and repetitive images (e.g. a football, and a red nursery rhyme book) throughout. George's football players are vibrant and exciting to look at, while the story and pictures are as charming as he is!

About the Author

Farah Waye was born in London. She has, for many years, been teaching children of primary school age in various countries around the world.

She has coached children in basic soccer skills and is convinced that her students performed academically better after a good, friendly game of soccer. She also advocates that dreams do come true... if you believe passionately in them. She states her son, and her time spent on a desert island in the tropics, and her encounter with Nelson Mandela - discussing the power of kicking a ball - as some of her favourite dreams come true.
