A Coach For All Seasons: The Roy Melvin Story

by Stuart Melvin

196 pages; quality trade paperback (softcover); catalogue #06-2861; ISBN 1-4251-1102-5; US$24.95, C$28.69, EUR19.45, £12.90

When the furnace exploded, Dad was left bloodied and blind. His eleven year high school coaching career was over, or was it? Six months later the "Wizard of the North Woods" emerged!

About the Book

This is the story of a time, a place and a man, a story of a bygone era set in the North Woods of Wisconsin and Michigan. Roy Melvin came to Hurley Wisconsin in the summer of 1923 to play professional baseball and stayed for twenty-eight years to teach and coach. His innovative coaching concepts made him "a legend in his time." He epitomized the coaches of that era, teaching school during the day, and, whether fall, winter or spring, coaching after school hours. Truly, a Coach for All Seasons!

About the Author

The author, Stuart Melvin, is the oldest son of Coach Roy Melvin and played athletics for his Dad four years in the late 1940s. He continues to pursue his enthusiasm for all sports, and has a keen interest in history and the outdoors. He lives in Denver with his Scottish born wife, Eleanor, and spends his summers in the seaside town of Largs, Scotland. This book was prompted by his younger sister, Maggie, who was fascinated by tales of her Dad's coaching.
