The Penny Entrepreneur: A Wartime Adventure

by Ronald W Pross

373 pages; quality trade paperback (softcover); catalogue #06-3018; ISBN 1-4251-1259-5; US$25.08, C$25.08, EUR17.13, £12.95

A delightfully humorous but none-the-less true account of a young boy with a small wartime education but with a big flair to earn a penny.

About the Book

The Penny Entrepreneur is a must for your bookshelf. It's a true-life adventure that reads like a novel that takes place during the Second World War. The story traces Ronald's, a three-year boy, exploits from 1936 and concludes in 1947 when he leaves school to commence full time employment. This entertaining document is an aid to year group 7-11 students learning English Social and Western European History during the above period.

Commencing from the year of the three kings and the Berlin Olympic games in 1936, the author establishes a picture of the plight of Europeans that suffered from Hitler's 'Blumenkreige' (Flowers war) with the conquest of Austria and Czechoslovakia in 1938 and highlights the creeping decline of democracy in Europe. From Dunkirk to the continuous setbacks in the North Africa campaign to the reverse of fortune in 1943, the story continues to the victory in Europe and finally Japan.

The older students of life that lived through the war years will need no reminding of the Battle of Britain, The Blitz and D Day. The main character could easily be likened to Richmal Crompton's 'William' but young or old alike you will warm to the antics of The Penny Entrepreneur.
