About the Book

An American Family

The story begins in 1921 with the birth of an Indian boy, Hawkeye Henry, who has a destiny. A hawk guides this destiny from the day of the boy's birth. The boy's educational foundation is built on his family heritage, his education in the white man's world, and his burning desire to fly an airplane. The boy shares a young, innocent relationship with Avis Kincaid, the daughter of a wealthy ranch owner. Their relationship grows into love despite their racial and cultural differences.

The relationship is shaken, however, on the day the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. These childhood sweethearts experience different adventures and trials during this world conflict. Hawkeye becomes a fighter pilot on the U.S.S. Enterprise and Avis serves as a nurse to our wounded soldiers on the U.S.S. Solace.

Despite the trauma of war, these two young people maintain their commitment to their country and each other.

Medicine Lodge, a small south Kansas town, is the setting for this historic and romantic drama. The town represents America in the 1920's, the 30's, and 40's through its commitment to hard work and traditional American patriotic and family values.
