About the Book
This book, produced and published by the Institute of Licensed Trade Stock Auditors, has been compiled by qualified people with a comprehensive experience of all sectors of the Catering and Licensed trades. It explains the principles and procedures; the advantages and benefits of regular stocktaking. The book covers most aspects of the Stock Auditors work and will be a valuable aid, both to practitioners and their clients. For the qualified or “trainee” stock auditor, the book provides an up-to-date and detailed guide to liquor, food and retail stock auditing and to the particular procedures involved in the change of business ownership – an area of equal interest to lawyers and accountants. Reference to this publication will increase understanding of this specialist area of the accounting practice. Great emphasis is placed on profitability and control. Efficient financial management skills are required in every sector of the trade and apply equally to the small country pub and to the large city-centre hotel; to the local working men’s club and the multi-bar night club operation. This book will be of use to anyone needing an insight into the skills, the principles and the professional “know how” of Stock Auditing.
About the Author
In 1953 a group of concerned individuals working in the licensed trade, formed an association to help and encourage others interested in becoming stocktakers, to improve the status and professionalism of members all over the UK. In June of that year the Incorporated Society of Stocktakers was founded. Since that time, the name has changed but the mission has not. Training Courses and Examinations are held twice a year so that members’ wishing to qualify can do so. The letters F.I.L.S.A and M.I.L.S.A after a name indicate that the bearer has undergone intensive training and achieved professional status through the qualifying exam.
Stocktakers have become an essential part of the “team” in many licensed and catering operations in the UK, whether that be a local pub or a large city centre hotel. They understand the need to control and improve the profitability of their client’s business and use their knowledge and skill to do just that.
Nowadays technology plays a large part in the process. Long gone are the days when the stocktaker would count the food or the liquor stock and a hand-written result would arrive in the post at some random date in the following weeks! Stock Auditors make full use of the advances in technology whilst understanding the basics.
The Institutes book “Taking Stock” gives the facts, the figures and the guidelines to becoming an effective Catering and Licensed Trades specialist.
