Fun With Shapes

by Tom Malensek

30 pages; Saddle stitched; catalogue #07-0142; ISBN 1-4251-1749-X; US$14.95, C$17.19, EUR11.66, £7.73

This book consists of colorful pictures made from geometric shapes with a word describing each picture.

About the Book

This book is designed to entertain children with it's colorful pictures and also help them learn and be creative. The colorful pictures in the book are familiar things that children easily recognize. Each picture has a word which describes it and this association between the two encourages children to learn a word by identifying the picture. These words then become the foundation for them as they grow older and start to read. The pictures are made from different geometric shapes - triangle, square, rectangle, oval, semi-circle and circle.

Children can learn the different shapes and then learn to create their own picture using these shapes. I have found with my own children and now grandchildren that books that have pictures with words identifying them have been one of their favorite type of books. They look at them over and over again. They like the familiarity of associating a picture with a word. These multiple readings of the same book increases a child's love of books. I started this book as a hand made book for my grandchildren. As my grandchildren grew, the book grew with them. At first they liked the colorful pictures, then they liked spelling the words that describe the picture and, finally, they liked to draw the pictures themselves using the basic geometric shapes. It was my grandchildren who inspired me to create the book and it's their love of books that made me want to publish the book.
