The true-life, 'cool' adventure, of an ordinary man who responds to a newspaper advert and ends up going on an expedition to the Magnetic North Pole!

About the Book

If you have ever fancied going on a 'cool' holiday but don't want to actually get cold, then follow this true-life adventure of an ordinary man who responds to a newspaper advert and ends up going to the Magnetic North Pole!

In this book Duncan Eadie describes what it was like to leave the concrete safety and security of big city London and be catapulted into the wilderness of the high Arctic on an extreme polar adventure.

Initially struggling to get on an expedition to the Pole, Duncan eventually travels with an unlikely group of novice adventurers - lawyers - and one of Britain's foremost polar explorers, Pen Hadow. Stuck with a seemingly bizarre training regime that included running around a heath at night with a tractor tyre tied to him, Duncan eventually gains the fitness that he needs to join the expedition. Braving temperatures of -60°C, he and his fellow companions struggle to get to their destination. Thin ice, broken teeth, frostbitten toes, and the ever-present fear of a polar bear encounter, are all obstacles to overcome. Worse still, he has to get on with a group of lawyers day and night far away from civilization, with only a loaded rifle for security.

Describing the trip of a lifetime, and how the best laid plans began to go awry, Duncan shows why 'In the Arctic the only certainty is the uncertainty'. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful and sometimes savage polar icescape, this is a charming and sometimes amusing account of an ordinary London office worker colliding with nature at its most extreme.
