About the Book

You may already have the majority of these recipes… however, are they all in one book?

The "Cookbook and Quotes" concept came to me quite accidentally. Each time I was in the midst of a culinary fiasco or disaster, my Dad would invariably walk through the back door- his words were always the same, are still reverberating off the kitchen walls and ones I shall never forget: "If It's Smoking, It's Cooking, When It's Black, It's Done!" Since the cookbook begins with a quote, I thought perhaps appropriate food and wine quotes should be carried throughout.

By virtue of my mother's Italian heritage, having grown up under that culture, it formed the basis for the Italian 'theme'- also featured throughout.

This cookbook is intended to be purposeful, useful and educational. The recipes range from Macaroni and Cheese and Meat Loaf to Steak with Marchand de vin Sauce and Crispy Duckling.

Whether you want a quick simple meal or are entertaining for an elegant dinner party, everything you need I in this book- Even Wine & Food Pairing Guides and scrumptious desserts.

' This & That' section contains helpful hints: How to Select and Use Herbs, All About Pasta, Glossary of Food Terms and much more.

Many of the recipes come from famous restaurants and chefs Nation wide.

When reading this book, our friends and family say they have received a tremendous amount of joy. I trust you will find humor, philosophy and wonderful food. Enjoy!

About the Author

Born Rose Smallwood in Berkeley, California in 1946; in 1951 her father moved the family to Crescent City, a rural town in Northern California.

Rose grew up in Crescent City, attending local schools. After graduating from Del Norte High, she immediately went into the work force.

Her career path (1964-1977) included employment in a title insurance company, Clerk of the Superior Court and legal secretary for a prominent attorney.

1977: she started a legal secretarial service business (first of its kind in Crescent City). The office was an 8'x8' square cubicle in the hallway of a large office building. She jokes, saying "my office was across from the coffee machine and next to the door marked janitor!" After 5 years a larger office – with a window – became available.

1985: Rose married Patrick Wilson; has two children by a former marriage, Lee and Stephanie, and five grandchildren whom are the love of her life. She's passionate about family, friends, cooking, playing the piano, horses and her Siamese cat.

1991: the Crescent City Jaycees bestowed upon her the honor of "Woman of the Year", was Co-Director of Miss Del Norte Scholarship Pageant for 10 years, the first woman accepted into the local Rotary Club and was very active community service wise.

Rose is a 10 year breast cancer survivor.

2003: after 26 years in business, and working a total of 39 years in the legal field, she sold the business and is retired.

June, 2004: Rose sustained multiple injuries as a result of a fall from her horse, including a slight brain injury. After 2 years of recuperation, 40 years of talking about and collecting recipes for a cookbook, it was time – the arduous task began, taking two years. However, all the time and energy expended, snags incurred, were worth the effort.
