About the Author

Steve Salmon was born on the Isle of Wight in 1948. In 1963 he joined the Royal Marines Band Service at the age of fourteen years and trained as a Clarinettist. In 1967 he changed instruments to the Oboe and Cor-anglais. During his 25 years of service Steve served in the Far East at HMS Terror, and 3rd Commando Brigade in Singapore. He was the last Oboist in the Royal Marines to be drafted to the Far East. On his return from overseas he served in various parts of the UK. His last ten years were spent as principal Oboist in the Royal Marines Band and Orchestra aboard the Royal Yacht HMY Britannia. He retired from the Royal Marines Portsmouth Band as a Band Sergeant in 1988. For the past eleven years he has been the Senior Craftsman * Woodwind repairs- for the Royal Marines Band Service and the Volunteer Bands of the Royal Navy gaining extensive knowledge and experience on the care and maintenance of woodwind instruments.
