Alces and Esel: Featuring - "Domestic Disturbance" & "Superman"

by Jamila Siddiqui

14 pages; Saddle stitched; illustrated; catalogue #07-1684; ISBN 1-4251-4099-8; US$7.82, C$8.99, EUR6.09, £4.04

This hilarious comic is for a not-so- sensitive audience. Featuring Alces, a crack addicted cat/dog type animal and Esel, a (supposedly) gay kangaroo, along with a cast of other bizarre characters.

About the Book

Most people assume that a comic illustrated with cats, dogs, and kangaroos would be an adorable children's book with an enchanting tale. Do not let the (somewhat) adorable animals fool you. Alces & Esel is a comic featuring Alces, a crack addicted cat/dog type animal looking for world domination, and Esel, a (supposedly) gay kangaroo. Edition One features two stories entitled "Domestic Disturbance" and "The Superman". These stories provide insight into the odd lives of Alces and Esel as they encounter other eccentric characters. This comic is probably not a good idea to read if you happen to be a very sensitive person with no sense of humour.

"Domestic Disturbance" introduces a foul mouthed Alces and an unsuspecting Esel as they encounter Officer Affe after he is called to attend to a domestic disturbance. The story details Officer Affe's unique style of policing as he attempts to clear up the situation at hand.

The second story, "The Superman", introduces Anwon, a superintendent that is never seen without his seductive wrench. The story outlines Anwon's efforts to seduce Esel's vengeful sister, along with a few other strange moments.

About the Author

Currently a University student, writing and illustrating a comic may not be the first thing that would come to mind when studying nursing. However, I wrote my first comic when I was in high school at the age of 16. I had no previous experience writing any comic in particular, beyond watching cartoons. Nevertheless, when deprived of television, strange things tend to happen. I was out in a small country town somewhere in Quebec awake at 2 am. While obviously very sleepy, my siblings and I decided to draw, just like the good old days in kindergarten. Initially, I attempted to draw a happy picture with a dolphin and sunset, but that did not last for very long. I ended up flipping the page over and drew a strange cat/dog/rat type animal (I still have no idea what kind of animal it is) that was apparently addicted to crack and was harassing a supposedly gay kangaroo, although he denied it. It seemed as though these characters spoke to me (not in a crazy way) and was eventually able to complete edition one of Alces & Esel. This comic is only one of 4 and a half that I have currently completed and hope to publish the others if this comic does well. I am probably the last person that you would think could write this comic since I do not swear, drink, or do drugs but I wrote whatever made me laugh and enjoy watching others laugh at it too.
