Dolphins in a Pool

by dfisher; Edited by Jill H. J Jurvelin; Illustrated by Vickie L. Weil

18 pages; Saddle stitched; catalogue #07-1713; ISBN 1-4251-4150-1; US$9.13, C$10.50, EUR7.12, £4.72

Friendship blooms when two adorable dolphins meet in a tidal pool. They learn that even in uncertain waters, a friend can bring joy and a better perspective on life.

About the Book

In this fanciful tale, Troy and Julie, two dolphins, meet when the tide brings Julie into a tidal pool where Troy has been alone for a while. Julie is surprised to find herself there, but she and Troy quickly become friends. They enjoy splashing to make rainbow droplets, and playing together until the tide comes in again and is high enough so they can swim together back to the ocean and enjoy playing there too. Though the theme is merely implied, not stated, these personable dolphins show that even in uncertain waters, finding a friend can bring joy and a better perspective on life. Eyelashes distinguish Julie and from Troy as the pictures bring the dream of the author to life in charming animated style that brings a smile to readers whether young or old.

About the Author

Dolphins in a Pond is dfisher's first book. It is based on a dream she once had about helping a dolphin out into a bay. When she and a friend were sharing dreams one day, the friend thought the dolphin dream would be a great children's book. That was all the encouragement needed to assemble a team to help with art work and editing. The book illustrates the principle she's found to be true: even in uncertain waters, finding a friend can bring joy and a better perspective on life.

dfisher has studied graphic arts. She likes oil painting on canvas, computing, and photography in her spare time. She and her support team have already put together a second book, also published by Trafford. It's a compilation of fanciful poems featuring insects and animals found - One Sunny Day in a Meadow.

About the Editor

Jill Jurvelin is a retired English and adult ed teacher. She has taught most of the levels from pre-school through college at various times in her travels as a military wife. She worked in a family literacy program for the last five years of her teaching career. She now spends much of her time seeking funding for administrative costs for non-profits, especially those involving family literacy, because she learned that funding is fairly readily available for "start-up" and "stuff", but not for paying the people who keep things going and put the "stuff" to good use. She's grandmother of seven charmers who enjoy previewing dfisher Books.

About the Illustrator

Vickie Weil has done a lot of painting and drawing in various mediums, but had not done any illustrating until dfisher asked her to consider illustrating Dolphins in a Pond. Vickie had a lot of fun giving personality to the dolphins, and has since illustrated dfisher's second book, One Sunny Day in a Meadow. That was an especially fun venture for her since she grew up on a farm and could really picture the poems' characters. After these two adventures, she's been inspired to go back to school and get some formal training as an artist illustrator.
