by R B Mountford

321 pages; quality trade paperback (softcover); catalogue #07-1771; ISBN 1-4251-4255-9; US$25.16, C$25.16, EUR17.19, £12.99

Ten-year-old Oliver finds a new and exciting life with his Grandparents. They own a very special model village with many hidden secrets giving Oliver lots of wonderful adventures.

Who is Oliver?

10-year-old Oliver has a safe, secure and well-ordered life at Highcrest Priory Boarding School for boys.

He is a popular boy who has many friends. His best friend is Benjamin Billingham; together they have many adventures, some good and some bad.

Oliver desperately misses his parents. He looks forward to spending time with them when the Easter holidays arrive. He knows they have arranged to spend the time with his Grandparents in the village of Holbury St Michael in North Devon.

This cheers Oliver up, because this is where he spends most of his holidays. His parents travel the world and do not spend enough time with him. Some half terms he stays at the school and goes to Devon whenever possible.

What is so special about Grandpa's house, it is set in the rolling hills of the Devonshire countryside. At the rear of the garden is the Holbury St Michael Model Village, this belongs to Oliver's Grandfather. He runs and maintains the miniature world, but Oliver wonders why he does this without any help.

The only thing that helps Oliver he knows he can always stay with his Grandparents. When Oliver feels sad, he thinks about the fun he has playing in the village and this makes him feel happy.

What Oliver does not know, there are secrets hidden in the village, keeping them from him will keep him safe. If he finds the secrets, they will change his life forever.

About the Author

R B Mountford is the pen name of Robin B Tribe

I am not too old and not too young, in fact quite young at heart. I decided to start writing the Oliver Patterson series because I believe that children need a new hero and something better to believe in.

In the early nineties, I was admitted to hospital unable to walk. After a few days, doctors explained to me that I may never walk again, but through sheer determination, although still disabled, I explored all the possibilities of finding a creative outlet to pursue.

In 1988 I found myself left with three children of school age to care for and a disability to cope with. Finally, I gave up my business and had to accept my limitations.

I then started writing short stories to keep myself busy and as a release from the day-to-day problems of my life, also to keep my children occupied and entertained. They enjoyed my stories immensely.

During 2001, I moved to the Kent Coast on doctors' orders, thankfully my health slowly improved then I started writing Oliver Patterson and the Model Village.

Although I still have great difficulty in getting around, I feel that the series of books can give me the ability to travel without suffering the hardship of leaving my study.

I do try to keep a cheery disposition and hope that children will enjoy reading the Oliver Patterson series as much as I am enjoying writing it.
