Opening My Mind is self-expression at a time of despair. As Mary Turner wrote poems to God, she released deeply buried emotions. Her inspiring poetry reveals her spiritual growth.

About the Book

Opening My Mind is self-expression at a time of personal crisis. Mary Turner began writing prayers to God, asking for comfort and peace of mind. She realized God had given her a medium to express the deeply buried emotions she had always felt too inhibited to speak aloud. Her poems are about her husband and family, happiness and loneliness, growing old and death.

As time passed, the benefits of her writing became apparent. The lighthearted side of her, always there but suppressed beneath life’s burdens, began to emerge. Her poetry revived memories of places she had visited, friends she had loved, and objects that had significance in her life. Her imagination, freed through her poetry, reveals a humorous, often comical side of Mary as she describes funny friends, awkward situations, and amusing anecdotes. The inspiration of Mrs. Turner’s spiritual and emotional growth shines through the poems as she puts her life into words. As you enter into the pages of this book, you too will find your own life woven within its lines.

About the Author

Mary Lee Richardson Turner was reared in rural Arkansas during the depression. Shy as a young girl, she was taught to mind others, speak when spoken to, and fear God. As she grew up, she found it difficult to speak her mind and easier to keep her thoughts to herself. While this kept her life calm on the surface, she had no means of self-expression. In the late 1970’s, many changes that came about in her life were unacceptable to her. The suppression of emotions and the inability to express herself made daily life unbearable.

Through her written prayers to God, Mary found a thread of hope and fought to gain a better understanding of the burdens she found so difficult to bear. She began to gain the strength she needed to find her way home to the peace and comfort that can only come from God. She is grateful for His blessings.
