About the Book
Kootenay Tales is a unique collection of stories about the Kootenay Rockies gleaned from original East Kootenay and regional newspaper articles. Relying on the vernacular of the day these historical stories take the reader back to the pioneer days and allows history to be told by those who lived it. This collection exposes the rawness of the past and lets us feel the rough and tumble times of men and women that were brave enough to render an account of the times.
The feature story entitled 'Circuses, Elephants and Fate" intertwines many details and contributes an historic and colourful representation of the times. The reader will not only learn of an event that made history in those days of the Wild West but will learn fascinating snippets of circus lore including who invented the leotard, the origin of the word Jumbo, and what the most famous circus candy was originally called. Kootenay Tales gives us a taste of the past and conveys the lifestyle, struggles, schemes and dreams of the early pioneers.
