Shelly Goes Outdoors is an educational children's book that teaches American Sign Language (ASL). Not only does it teach ASL, it emphasizes the alphabet, animals, colors, and numbers. This is a great instructional tool for both children and parents.
About the Book
This introductory level American Sign Language instructional reader provides young children and their parents with an opportunity to learn signs that are a necessity in today's society. A little girl named Shelly encounters many elements of society while going on her daily walk. For every item she observes, Shelly provides the reader with the corresponding sign in American Sign Language. An introduction to the alphabet as well as the incorporation of colors, numbers, animals, and people will encourage both the child and parent to broaden their fluency of the language. Professionals find that the use of sign language by younger children (even babies) as a communicational tool decreases a lot of the anger and frustration that often results from their inability to convey certain ideas to others. This is due to the complexity of the English language. It has been noticed by many that sign language resources for young children are often hard to find and their popularity is extremely low. This book, and other forthcoming works in the series, was created by an author who has a lot of firsthand experience with the use of sign language with young children. The author hopes to expose both young children and their parents to the area of American Sign Language through this carefully crafted book. Included with the book is an instructional DVD that demonstrates the signs used in the book along with the American Sign Language alphabet.
About the Author
Kentrell Martin was born in Gainesville, Fl. He received his B.S. in Management from the University of New Orleans. He is currently working on obtaining a degree to become an American Sign Language interpreter. Kentrell has had a lot of exposure with American Sign Language throughout his life as his brother is deaf and sign language is their main method of communication. He was involved with the deaf community at schools for the disabled throughout his adolescent years. Inspired by a desire to help those who are not hard of hearing communicate with those who are, Kentrell went on to develop a series of books designed to teach children and their parents the basics of American Sign Language.
