Daydream For A Dime and Other Stories

by John Strong; Photographs by David Mitchell

150 pages; quality trade paperback (softcover); catalogue #07-2789; ISBN 1-4251-6124-3; US$14.53, C$14.53, EUR9.92, £7.50

A classic collection of stories ranging from humorous to sad, from West Africa to Dublin. Stimulating and amusing fiction.

About the Book

This collection of short stories reflects the experiences of the author. John Strong worked as a junior doctor in the 1950’s in places as diverse as Dublin, West Africa and the UK.

However, not all the stories have a medical dimension. They include a wide variety of characters ranging from an irascible surgeon, a distinguished member of a London club to a mother giving birth in a Dublin tenement. A couple of the stories are set in 1950’s West Africa, giving a fascinating insight into relationships.

Some of the stories reflect true-life situations, others are entirely fictional. Many are humorous but often contain a degree of pathos. The volume also includes several short poems.

This book would be an ideal companion for a long air flight or train journey.

About the Author

John Strong is the only grandson of the famous strongman and body builder, Eugen Sandow. He was educated at Monmouth School and subsequently at Downing College Cambridge and St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Following National Service in West Africa he trained as an ophthalmic surgeon at Exeter, Reading and Newcastle prior to becoming a consultant in Wiltshire. His pastimes are oil and watercolour painting, cycling and golf.
