About the Book
The Manual provides a comprehensive compendium of information, guidelines and practical interventions to plan for, and, in the event of a crisis, intervene. Accidents, sudden loss, violence, suicide and large-scale disasters are addressed in a down-to-earth, immediately usable manner. The book is the result of the contributor's years of experience working in the field and, as a result, has a very practical bent. Strategies and activities for dealing with students, adults, crisis-team staff and community members are clearly described through-out. Included are Immediate Responses Checklists to guide immediate responses, should an actual crisis occur. The Manual is foundational for staff crisis intervention training at the individual, school, school-district and community levels.
About the Author
Peter White and David Peat first met in the 1990's while they were colleague psychologists in the Yukon Territory, Canada. They periodically kept in touch, and finally were able to work together again in Singapore and the Maldives during 2005. They continue to collaborate in various ways, in spite of living in different parts of Canada.
Peter White is from Nova Scotia, Canada and moved from Halifax to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada in 1991. He has been employed with the Yukon Territory Government's Department of Education Special Programs Branch as an Educational Psychologist since that time. Peter completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Logic and Semantics at Dalhousie University in Halifax, his Bachelor of Education degree at Acadia University in Wolfville, and his Master of Arts degree in Educational Psychology and Measurement at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. Prior to relocating to Whitehorse, Peter worked as an Educational Psychologist with the Nova Scotia Hospital's Psychology Department in Dartmouth, as a Training Officer with the Nova Scotia Hospital's Staff Development Department, and as an Educational Psychologist with the Terra Nova and Cape Freels Integrated School Boards in Newfoundland. Peter has also worked as an Educational Psychologist with the Sooke District School Board on Vancouver Island, the Prince George District School Board in central British Columbia, and as a 'free-lance' psychologist in Atlin, northern British Columbia. Recently, Peter worked in Singapore with Peat & Associates as an Educational Psychologist conducting assessments and presenting teacher in-services at international schools. He also assisted in the delivery of post-tsunami, trainer-of-trainer workshops for Community-level Workers in Male, Republic of Maldives.
Dr. Peat has been involved in the fields of education, rehabilitation and health since 1972. As a public and private school teacher, he has instructed people of all ages, most frequently those with 'special needs'. Responsibilities within school settings have included being a science, mathematics and physical education teacher, a 'special education' teacher, a psychologist, a school administrator, a district-level coordinator of 'special services' and an associate superintendent of schools.
In 1984, he took a leave from teaching and administration to obtain Masters of Education and Ph.D. degrees. During this time he also earned an Intercultural Certificate, qualified as a reading clinician and was registered as a psychologist (College of Alberta Psychologists, Canada). As a psychologist, Dr. Peat has worked in various settings in Canada, including the Yukon. Internationally, he has been employed in Kuwait, Qatar and Singapore in hospital, private school and government settings. He has also served as a consultant, helping schools to develop programs and interventions for students with behavioural difficulties; designing and implementing locally developed 'thinking-skills' programs; and evaluating special education services. Consulting and teaching in the Maldives, Philippines and Sri Lanka, specifically on the topics of post-disaster psychosocial support and the development of integrated support services for all children, was, and continues to be, a passion.
Presently, Dr. Peat is the Associate Superintendent of Learning with the Rocky View School Division #41, Airdrie, Alberta, Canada. His responsibilities include overseeing four Branches within the Learning Department, specifically, Student Support, Collaborative Initiatives, Instruction and Technology.
