Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish immigrant parents, Dale was tutored in singing by his father, famed Cantor Joshua Lind. At nine, Dale was hailed as "the world's youngest cantorial prodigy." Emerging from tenement living, Dale and his brothers, Murray and Phil, formed a singing trio in 1937. In an era when radio, vaudeville and night clubs were the main venues of entertainment, "The Three Lind Brothers" starred in them all.

As a GI in World War II, Dale witnessed the horrors and ravages of war, including the invasion of the Philippines.
