The King's False Teeth & The Clown

by Martin P. Crew-Gee

26 pages; Saddle stitched; catalogue #08-0153; ISBN 1-4251-7045-5; US$12.95, C$12.95, EUR8.85, £6.69

This is a unique, funny, educational keepsake book with a cartoon story in verse, puzzles, teaching limericks and coloring pages. A great way to learn English; kids will love it.

About the Book

The theme is a simple plot about a King who loses his gold false teeth. The Clown, or Court Jester, knows all along where the teeth are. Meanwhile, it contains a moral about respect for other people. The clothes and shoes illustrated were inspired by authentic fashion from the 1500’s.

The funny story is described in verse form with cartoon illustrations. Poetry is coming back into school curriculums as a form of the English language beneficial to the education of children. It teaches language structure and how to condense a story in a concise, rhythmic way. Therefore the book contains a “How to write limericks” section. They are fun to compose and, on completion, an achievement that teaches children to think precisely.

In addition, there is a mathematical puzzle page with Kidzudoku exercises with numbers to solve Sudoku type puzzles. As well, there are revolutionary and original pages of Sudoku puzzles that can be colored. There is Stinkeydoku (animals), Smileydoku (funny faces inside geometric forms) and Smellydoku (flowers). Each puzzle has a spelling test. The puzzles are not only a lot of fun to do, but also teaches children to draw intricate objects within a specific framework.

The original characters in the story are then outlined on coloring pages that include Chateau Kostalot, where it can be assumed the King, Queen, Clown and the Court live. As a keepsake, the last page is for memorabilia. It is always a lot of fun to recall happy memories later on in life.

About the Author

Martin P. Crew-Gee was born in 1942 in Shifnal, Shropshire, in the United Kingdom. After his education was completed at St. Michael's College boarding school, he began Business and Law studies to be eventually a Contract Lawyer and at the same time worked at his first job as a Junior Correspondent in his home town of Peterborough, in England. He then made a major career change and decided to go to Art College and spent four years at DeMontfort University in Leicester, graduating as a Designer specializing in Body Fashions.

He was a designer and merchandiser for forty years and worked in four different countries. He settled in Canada in 1985 and became a Canadian citizen in 1995. During those years his writing abilities were improved composing reports, research documents, training manuals for designers and seminars for personnel.

In 2007 he turned 65 years old and, with a strong desire to be fulfilled, decided to plunge into writing books for children and taught himself to draw cartoons. This is his first attempt at writing and illustrating a book. "But apparently I broke all the rules" he said. He wanted to create the feeling of telling a story while sketching the characters, with his three grandsons around the kitchen table. "I did that for my two kids when they were young and they loved them. There is nothing more pleasing than to hear people laugh, especially kids."

He now lives alone in the beautiful town of Saint-Bruno, in Quebec.
