About the Author

Andrew Sumner, (known on the boxing circuit and by his friends as Andy but given the full version of his forename by family members), is a retired former Head of Modern Languages. He still teaches French and Spanish on a part-time basis to adult classes.

Andy boxed at school and at university, returning to the gym over twenty years later and rekindling his active interest in the sport, first by sparring, then by coaching amateurs at gyms in the Fylde area and latterly at Pool of Life ABC in Atherton, Greater Manchester. Four of his "lads" have amassed twelve national titles between them, two of them moving into the pro ranks recently.

Andy lists as his passions: boxing's history, French literature and football and he is a committed follower of Preston North End. His heroes are Archie Moore, Larry Holmes, Sir Tom Finney and the French poet Baudelaire.

Andy is married with two children and two grandchildren. He lives in New Longton, Preston, Lancashire.
