Hinterland Humour is definitely not your average hunting and fishing book! The stories which are recounted, clearly illustrate that such activities often have a lighter and amusing side, and are very much different than the common perception.

In his richly descriptive and often warm and humourous fashion, the author reflects on the baffling and sometimes unpredictable reactions of animals in the wild, to their encounter with humans. These encounters, and the stories of the participants at a remote cabin in the Ontario bush, are culled from over fifty years of experiences, as he and his partners pursued the traditional activities of hunting and fishing. The situations that developed, many times resulted in unexpected and amusing incidents, some of which have qualified to be included with those that make up the lore of their camp.

Situated on a remote Ontario lake, the log cabin of native white pine, is the centre for the activities and stories which are told. Its location provides a unique place of solitude and regeneration and, in all seasons, an oasis from the burdens of city life.

As a keen observer of nature and wildlife, the author’s descriptions of both, will give the reader a deeper understanding and appreciation as to what motivates many to spend their leisure time in the woods and on the lakes. From the stories which are retold, it will also become apparent that this attraction has more to do with the opportunity to experience the wilderness, as well as the camaraderie of others, while sharing these activities.

About the Author

Very early in his childhood the author developed an abiding interest and love for the forests and lakes of his native province of Ontario, and for any activity, which would see him on a forested path, or on the water.

In his youth, the library became David’s source for education on any subject related to the outdoors and nature, while the opportunity to spend the summer months with family at the lake, provided an environment for the practical application of the knowledge he had gained.

David’s business career with a major telecommunications company spanned thirty-three years and saw numerous relocations of household and family. But during this time, the family’s constant anchor and touch-stone of spiritual regeneration, was their cottage, north of Toronto, which they enjoyed for fifty-five years.

As an avid outdoorsman, David continues to enjoy the weeks of hunting and fishing and any opportunity that will take him to the lakes and woods. He is a voracious reader with a particular weakness for courtroom drama as well as historical and crime novels. Given his love of the outdoors, it is no surprise that his interest in art leans towards landscapes, of which he has an extensive collection.

He presently resides with his wife, in Ottawa.
