About Me:

I have edited 5 books for Trafford self-publishing authors, and I can do the same for you. I have a strong business/legal background and a Technical Communication Certification. My client base includes publishers, book designers and self-publishing authors from both the US and Canada. I am a member of the Editors Association of Canada and the Indexing Society of Canada. I am always interested in new projects.

  • Back of book indexing

I can review your manuscript and give advice on any organizational, substantive or grammatical problems, or on how to improve appearance, readability, and overall marketability. I will not rewrite your manuscript but can coach and make suggestions. While simple proofreading can take as little as a week, more substantive or structural editing will take longer. I work primarily by e-mail and try to respond to inquiries promptly.

Professionally trained at SFU and USDA (Applied Indexing), I am also a fast and careful indexer. I use Sky indexing software and can easily reproduce your index in Microsoft Word. My clients have found that receiving their completed index by e-mail to be fast and convenient.

Feedback:

Editing

Dr. Jane Kanchense (Zimbabwe¹s Child Brides): "Thank you so much. This thing was hard for me to edit. I wish I had known you sooner."

E. J. Lister (Muy Caliente): "Thank you for wonderful job of editing my novel. I really appreciate the effort that you put into making this project a personal achievement. If anyone would like to review the work you did for me on the novel they can read sample pages at: www.trafford.com/06-3272."

Harold S. Boehlke (The Viking Serpent): "As it turned out I was lucky and picked the right person for the job. I am very happy with the job you did for me, I will be happy to give you any recommendations."

Gordon Green (Fierce & Unequal Combat): "Thank you for your diligent efforts and for your kind comments about my 'charming book'. I am thrilled that you found so little wrong with my manuscript. Having said that, your eagle eye did pick up a couple of important …"

Karoly Sandor (various stories): "During our initial telephone conversation, Betty agreed to read an excerpt from my novel. At our meeting the following week, she discussed in great detail her assessment of my writing, and made several suggestions. I was impressed by her insight into my rather complicated novel, but disappointed that it needed much more work. Nevertheless I had to admit her ideas were very good. At all times, I have found Betty to be an outstanding professional. I very much recommend Betty Taylor as an editor and adviser to all Writers, whether they are aspiring or experienced."

Patrick Howell (Gyroplane Flying for Beginners): "Betty's editing of my book was highly praised by the Texas Chapter of the Popular Rotorcraft Association that uses my book as a training manual."

Debra Tillery (When Worlds Collide): "I feel that I've now got some solid direction and am looking forward to implementing the changes. Again my sincerest thanks for your honesty and helpfulness. Perhaps this time it will succeed."

Indexing

Dr. Cedric Joseph (Anglo-American Diplomacy and the Reopening of the Guyana-Venezuela Boundary Controversy): "Many thanks again for completing the Index with utmost professionalism. I am very pleased with every aspect of it, particularly in maintaining your schedule… I should also like to record my appreciation for the many initiatives you took and for briefing yourself… on a difficult subject… Your grasp of the matter was commendable."

Dr. Dan Curtis (Dr. Dan's Super Weight Loss Plan): "It looks excellent. It made me feel better about the whole project. Reading through the index makes me feel that there is a lot of good information there. Thanks."

Dr. Martin Hollenberg (For the Love of Nature): "Betty the index looks extremely well done. Many, many thanks."

Shalene Takara (book designer): "Thank you very much for all your hard work! We are very happy with the index, and we also very much appreciate your eagle eye. We look forward to working with you again on future projects."

Saida Désilets (Emergence of the Sensual Woman): "Aloha Betty! wow! you are the supreme indexer! I will recommend you for sure! and would love to use you again, if you are open… preferably with a lot more notice! (now that I have found you.) I love that you are very professional and I LOVE THE INDEX!!!! I will send you a printed copy of the book when it is out."

For a Cost Estimate: (CDN$)

My fees vary with the difficulty of the manuscript. Generally I charge $30 an hour. For a fair cost estimate of your project, please e-mail a Word.doc attachment of about 10 pages from midway in your manuscript. Provide a brief outline of the subject matter, the number of pages, and explain exactly what you want to be done. I will respond with comments and estimation of cost.
