Moving beyond the "rejection" phase

Few new authors -- and especially those with books for which there is limited or untested market potential, or only a niche audience -- will be able to get a contract from a conventional publishing house. Conventional publishers have little capital to risk on an unproven venture. Some publishers reject thousands of proposals for every manuscript they do accept. Clearly this isn't a solution for most aspiring authors.

Looking for a better way

Until recently, the determined author was faced with only a few unsatisfactory options:

  • do-it-yourself (imagine the complications of ISBNs, copyright, legal deposits, barcodes, editing, layout, designing a cover, tendering the printing, paying for a press run, arranging warehousing, setting up accounts with wholesalers and retailers, notifying the book trade, creating a website, securing merchant credit card accounts, receiving a trickle of orders, packaging and postage, invoicing, collecting accounts, etc., etc.) Whew!

  • use a "vanity publisher" and pay €10,000 to €20,000 or more, or...

  • give up.

A breakthrough!

It took self-publishing authors to invent a great solution -- the new process is called "Trafford's On-Demand Publishing Service". It is being used by thousands of authors from over 120 countries. So popular is Trafford's innovative process that we have so far published over 12,000 titles worldwide!

Here's how it works

Trafford looks after all the legal and administrative tasks, and prepares your book for printing "on demand". Then we arrange (depending on package chosen) various sales and distribution alternatives and promotional tools. We fill orders from individuals, bookshops and wholesalers, printing the books one-at-a-time "on-demand" to match incoming orders (so there is no expensive inventory of preprinted books and no waste). From the sale price, we set aside a healthy author's royalty -- and send you a cheque every three months.

Flexibility because no two authors are the same

Your total investment will be between €750 for the most basic service and €1850 for the top-of-the-line Best Seller PLUS plan. Depending on the package, you will receive between 10 and 40 books. If you need more copies, you can order in any quantity (even a single copy if you wish) at any time, and pay only 40% of the retail price -- or less.

Control of the copyright, content, appearance and price

Here's more great news: you keep 100% of your copyright. You can switch to a conventional publisher if an offer comes along. You can sell movie rights, translation rights, serialisation -- you keep all the money and you are not bound to Trafford in any way.

"Your book, your way." The author decides on the text, images, layout, cover design, size and retail price. You write the promotional messages sent to the book trade and displayed on your book's unique web page.

Your book will have the most extensive distribution in the world

With over 12,000 titles in our catalogue, Trafford efficiently informs booksellers, librarians and wholesalers, around the globe, about the availability of its authors' books. We have shipped books to customers in every continent -- including Antarctica! With so many titles, we've been able to negotiate incredibly extensive distribution -- bookshops wishing to stock your book can order through all the major distributors/wholesalers. Those retail orders are printed in Canada, USA, UK and Germany, with print-on-demand facilities soon to be added in other countries. Plus your book can have an eBook edition which can be purchased for instant delivery to a customer anywhere in the world.

Thanks,

Trafford Publishing

P.S. As well as the popular trade paperback style book, we can also publish short, full-colour picture books. Including scanning your artwork, colour separations and full layout, the cost for publishing a colour book is under €1000. Until Trafford broke the price barrier, self-publishing a colour book would have cost tens of thousands of euros.

P.P.S. Keep reading to learn more about the process and to decide which publishing package best suits your plans and budget.

"As a little girl, I made a list of all the things I wanted to do when I grew up -- and publishing a book was one of them. At first I entertained the idea of self-publishing using a conventional printer, but after doing some research, found the initial overhead -- just to get the book into print -- put my plans out of reach. I decided to go the on-demand route and it was really easy! I thought it was going to be a lot harder.

"At Trafford Publishing, the people are extremely friendly and willing to talk. They even charge a good price for what you get! I have five more books to go and Trafford will be the first company I approach. "

--- Sandra Dixon, author of Mom, Why is the Sea Salty?
    ISBN 1-55395-415-7

Consider these remarkable features and benefits included in ALL publishing packages:

  • You retain full control of the content, design and layout and keep all rights. You get your book published your way.

  • Our publishing agreement is non-exclusive. You can enter into other publishing agreements or sell the film and television rights with no obligation to Trafford.

  • No extra charge for printing any number of graphics, photos, charts, tables, indexes, tables of contents, etc. A traditional printer would charge hundreds of euros for these "extras".

  • Cover layout is included at no extra cost. You supply photos, artwork, maps, etc. for your cover, and instructions -- and one of our efficient technicians will devote two hours to creating a handsome, full-colour glossy cover.

  • ISBN number, EAN barcode (needed for bookshops and other retailers) and library cataloguing (required by most libraries) are all included at no extra cost. Acquiring these items yourself (if you knew how) would take weeks and cost you hundreds of euros.

  • Since your book is printed on demand to fill orders, no investment in inventory is required. This can save you thousands of euros in printing costs, warehousing, obsolescence and interest expense. You can make changes and updates easily at any time for a small additional charge.

  • Our royalties are substantially larger than the royalties paid by conventional publishers. We pay you 60% of the gross profit margin on each sale.

  • You decide the retail price: the higher the price, the larger the royalty. A vanity press sets the retail price based on book size rather than the value of content. If the nature of your book's content warrants a high price, you can set the retail price at that amount and receive a very substantial royalty.

  • You can buy your book from us at our in-house print shop cost. Conventional publishers charge you retail price less a small discount. The price difference can amount to hundreds or thousands of euros for most authors -- Trafford's pricing is especially lucrative for you if you sell your own books at seminars, bookfairs, etc.

  • We deposit a copy of your book with the National Library to help protect your copyright at no extra cost to you. This is a legal requirement and some agents would charge over €100 for this service.

All the above benefits are included in ALL the publishing packages

Trafford's "entry level" service is the Legacy PLUS package (which includes full layout of inside pages) and the Legacy Classic package (for those do-it-yourself authors who wish to do the page layout themselves and save €500). There are no marketing tools and no distribution included with the Legacy level packages. Legacy packages are typically for authors who want a legally registered book with all the benefits listed above, and who will be selling copies locally only.

ADD SOME MARKETING AND DISTRIBUTION by moving up to an Entrepreneur level publishing package

With the Entrepreneur PLUS (includes page layout) or Entrepreneur Classic (do-it-yourself layout) package, your book will be available through Trafford's bookshop. We build a webpage for your book so Internet users can read an excerpt and place an order. We also receive orders via phone, fax, email and post. Books are printed and shipped promptly to fill incoming orders, and your royalties are sent to you every three months.

ADD GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION AND MORE MARKETING TOOLS by moving up to a Best Seller PLUS or Best Seller Classic publishing package

With the Best Seller PLUS or Best Seller Classic package, Trafford can make your book available worldwide via the major Internet booksellers' web sites in addition to Trafford's own online bookshop. Trafford's staff will send your book's description to the main book industry reference databases, such as Nielsen BookData, Bowker's Books-in-Print, and Pubstock -- so bookshops and libraries around the world can locate your book for special orders. We notify key Internet search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, and announce your book's availability to thousands of media and book industry people.

Bookshops around the world can order our books through leading distributors and wholesalers, such as Bertram Books and Gardner's in the UK, and Baker & Taylor and Ingram Books in the US (the latter being the largest book distributor in the world!). You will receive 300 bookmarks (with information on how to order your book) to pass out in person, 100 colour postcards to send to your network of friends, associates and relatives, and 10 colour posters showing your book's cover.

If you want us to try selling your book as an "e-book" as well as a printed book, we'll do that too.

Great news! You can start with a Legacy level package and move up to another level at any time, simply by paying the difference in package prices - there is no penalty fee.

"Trafford has provided a very personal, step-by-step procedure for the publishing of my book, which was fun and educational. The end result has been exciting and exhilarating! The publishing process has been a fulfilling experience, and I will definitely continue to team with Trafford."

--- Ginger Wich, author of Neil the Eel
    ISBN 1-55395-336-0

Trafford offers six different On-Demand Publishing Service™ packages designed to meet different needs. You can start with any package and upgrade for the price difference at any time. Here's a more detailed explanation of your options:

Start with our Legacy PLUS Package (€1250) or our Legacy Classic Package (€750)

The on-demand publishing process requires that your book be converted to a digital computer file suitable for "on-demand" printing. When you have finished editing and proofreading your book, we can take over and convert it into a digital file in a format suitable for high-speed digital printers.

Selecting the PLUS option means that you will be having our technicians professionally layout (typeset) your book's inside pages, creating a custom design that emulates the appearance of an existing book that you admire. (You'll send us photocopies of a few pages to show us what style you want.)

If you are computer savvy and you wish to do the layout yourself, you can select the Classic option and save €500. (We'll provide full technical specifications and a layout tips booklet to help you create a stable print file.)

We'll add the necessary ISBN number and EAN barcode required by bookshops and other retailers. We'll obtain the library cataloguing needed by libraries and put an Internet link to that cataloguing record on your book's copyright page.

We'll produce a glossy full-colour cover layout that follows your ideas and vision for your book.

At this stage we'll print a proof for your approval and, once you've given us your sign-off, we'll perform the legal deposit of your book. (In addition to being a a legal requirement, this also helps guard your copyright.) You will receive 10 copies of your book. These can be distributed to friends, associates, reviewers, etc., or sold.

And remember, you still own ALL marketing, movie, TV and electronic rights to your work AND you control the book layout, size and cover design.

The Legacy PLUS and Legacy Classic packages are ideal for books which do not require commercial distribution. This includes books such as family histories, books written for specific organizations or associations, manuals, reports and sales seminar materials.

You may buy as many books as you wish, in any quantity at any time, at the low prices shown in our print shop price list. (When you are finished with this page, go to the Publishing Office section of our website, select Author Toolkit and click on the Price Calculator to see the wholesale cost and minimum retail price of your book. The price chart is also included in the publishing guide you'll be receiving.)

You may resell your books anywhere you wish (or give them to friends or business contacts). Trafford does not sell Legacy PLUS and Legacy Classic books to anyone but the author, so those titles do not appear on our website bookshop.

Choose the services you need now to get started and upgrade later

In addition to the valuable publishing services in the Legacy PLUS and Legacy Classic packages described above, we offer four other packages to assist you in marketing, distributing and publicising your book. You can start with a Legacy PLUS or Legacy Classic package and upgrade at any time to a higher level package on payment of the price difference.

Entrepreneur PLUS Package (€1450) and Entrepreneur Classic Package (€950)

These packages are designed for entrepreneurial authors and others who want to sell their books on their own (for example, at seminars, book fairs, craft shows and small bookshops). These authors also need our website with order processing, invoicing and charge card capabilities to handle orders because they are often on the road -- or simply because the author does not want to be bothered with order taking, credit cards and shipping.

The Entrepreneur PLUS and Entrepreneur Classic Packages include everything in the Legacy level packages plus a custom page on the Trafford website with a photo of you and your book's cover, a synopsis of the content and one or two excerpts that you select.

Your book will be listed in Trafford's on-line bookshop for order-processing, invoicing, shipping and royalty payment services. (Royalties are paid quarterly.)

You can link from your own website and other Internet locations to your book's uniquely-addressed page on the Trafford website to let Trafford handle orders for you. This eliminates the cost and hassle of doing order processing, shipping, invoicing and charge card processing.

The Entrepreneur PLUS package includes a full custom professional layout and is available for €1450. The Entrepreneur Classic package is only €950 -- this is for authors doing their own page layout. Both entrepreneur packages include 20 free books to start you off.

You may buy as many books as you wish, in any quantity at any time, at the low costs shown in our print shop price list and resell them yourself anywhere you wish and retain ALL the proceeds of the sale. (You may also find yourself giving copies to friends or business contacts.) You keep ALL marketing, movie, TV and electronic rights to your work AND you control the book layout, size and cover design.

How are prices and royalties calculated? You, the author, set the retail price. When orders are received by the Trafford bookshop website, they will be "sold" with the Trafford bookshop receiving 25% of the retail price. Your royalty is 60% of the "gross margin" (net sale amount less the printing cost).

For example, the cost of a 160-page paperback book with a colour cover on our print shop price list is €5.63 for a quantity of one. If you set the retail price of such a book at €20.00 (minimum retail price for this book would be €14.07), our bookshop processes the customer's credit card for the full amount, and deducts €5.00 for its services (25% of the retail price). Net sale amount is €15.00

The gross margin would be the net sale amount of €15.00 less the single-copy print cost of €5.63, in other words, €9.37.

In this example, you would receive a royalty of €5.62 per book (€9.37 x 60% royalty). That's almost 40% of the net sale amount which is much higher than conventional publishers' royalties of 6 to 10%. (All figures in this example are in euros.)

Best Seller PLUS Package (€1850) and Best Seller Classic Package (€1350)

These packages are designed for the author who needs and wants to have his/her book available world-wide through book industry channels, and to have additional publicity and promotional tools. If you want your book to be available:

  • in our bookshop and on our Internet web site,

  • on the websites of Amazon, Borders, Abebooks, Barnes & Noble (US), Chapters-Indigo (Canada), and an ever-growing number of other international online resellers

  • in all the major industry reference databases, including Bowker's Books-in-Print, Nielsen BookData, PubStock and others, and

  • in the databases of large distributors and wholesalers, such as Bertram Books and Gardner's (in the UK), Baker & Taylor and Ingram Books (in the US), and Libri (in Germany and other European coutries)

then you need one of Trafford's "Best Seller" level packages.

In addition to all of the features in the Legacy and Entrepreneur level packages and the above listings in the world-wide Internet booksellers' web sites and conventional booksellers' catalogs, the Best Seller Packages include 40 free copies of your book, perhaps for your first book signing or to distribute to book reviewers -- you decide how to use them.

These books could also be turned into €400 to €800 if you simply sell them yourself, depending on the retail price of your book. Additional copies can be purchased in any quantity whenever you need more, at the low costs shown in our print shop price list.

If you aren't keen on doing a layout/typesetting yourself, you'll be selecting the PLUS option to have our technicians produce a custom professional layout that ensures your book looks similar to any book sample you provide to us. Pick any book from your home library or bookshop, and send us photocopies of typical pages -- our technicians will emulate that design for your book.

The Best Seller packages also include submitting your book's unique webpage address on the Trafford site to key search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, so that potential readers can find your book by searching for key words and phrases. We also inform the book industry by sending an email announcement to thousands of book industry and media contacts.

You will receive 300 bookmarks to pass on to contacts and friends. These bookmarks have the unique Internet address for your web page and the numbers to call to order your book from Trafford.

Want to inform all your friends, relatives and contacts about your book's availability? If so, you'll appreciate having 100 full-colour postcards that show your book's cover.

Need to attract attention at a bookshop signing, or promote a reading in your local library? Our authors love receiving 10 free colour posters of your book's cover. Each poster is about 11 inches wide by 17 inches tall, usually with a white space at the bottom to write in the details of your event.

The Best Seller packages include technical preparation of a glossy full-colour cover for your book, as described above in the other packages.

For Best Seller books, Trafford will process orders from ALL bookshops, selling to them at 40% off the retail price you set for your book (except the Trafford bookshop which takes only 25% off retail). Book distributors and wholesalers (who supply bookshops) typically receive a discount of 50% off the retail price. Libraries receive an industry-standard 15% discount. Our authors' books have sold in over 120 countries to date. We process orders in US and Canadian dollars, British pounds sterling and euro. You set the retail price in euros and we help you convert to the other currencies.

If the book is ordered by a bookshop (be it an online store such as Amazon.com, or a regular bookshop in your neighborhood) for resale to their customer, that bookshop would get a 40% discount from the retail price. In the above example of a €20.00 book with 160 pages, your royalty would be €3.82 (calculate (€12.00 - €5.63) x 60% royalty), which is a very substantial 32% of the net sale amount.

And here's the best part!

YOU HAVE NO INVESTMENT IN INVENTORY

Do you really need the hassle and cost of publishing on your own?

Trafford was set up by authors to help other authors get their books into print and distributed as economically and efficiently as possible. Why should each individual author have to reinvent the wheel (by creating a mini publishing business) just to get a book into print? That's crazy! Authors want to write. Publishers (and Trafford's acclaimed publishing service) ought to handle the publishing work, right?

You could probably write two more books in the time it would take you to create your own mini publishing empire and get your first book into distribution channels. Who needs all that pain and effort and the large financial risk when you could be relaxing and helping finance your second book on the royalties from the first?

Many a successful author started out self-publishing (the old hard way ... before Trafford's process was invented in 1995). Now you can join company with Ben Franklin, Mark Twain, Beatrix Potter, Virginia Woolf, Rudyard Kipling, Roddy Doyle, Margaret Atwood, James Redfield ("The Celestine Prophecy") and thousands of other respected self-publishers without the major expense, risk and hard work.

The process to publish is really VERY straight-forward: You will be following these two simple steps to publish your book:

1. Sign on, pay and answer the metadata questions
Fax or post the completed contract (pages 15 to 16 of the guide) to Trafford. We require full payment with your contract -- by cheque, money order or credit card.

Send your answers to the metadata questions (page 14 of the guide) via fax, post or email. Once we have received your signed agreement and metadata responses, your book will be given an ISBN and you'll be assigned to your personal author services representative.

2. Send in the materials for your book's cover and for the inside pages to your author services rep
For PLUS package authors, send a disk or CD of your manuscript plus a printout and photocopied pages from the book to be emulated.

For Classic package authors, you'll be reading the technical specifications and layout tips, then creating a postscript or a PDF format file of your layout. Send this on a disc or CD.

Included in all packages is having our technicians assemble a full-colour cover using your photos or artwork and following your instructions. Send the photos, art, instructions and a mock-up to your representative.

If there are any questions about your materials when they arrive at Trafford's office, we'll discuss options with you before surcharges are incurred.

It really is delightfully simple. Ready to start?

Every author measures "success" in a different way ...

"When I set out to write my first book, research showed that On-Demand Publishing would be ideal for my needs. Trafford was highly recommended by a colleague, who had used your services for publishing their own book.

"I had never written or published a book before and Trafford took me through each step of the process. Jolene Lowey, my Trafford Author Services Representative, was always on top of things, quickly answering any questions that I had and easing my fears as the book came to market.

"The Best Seller Package allowed me to concentrate on promoting my book as Trafford took care of the time-consuming order taking and fulfillment process. I am preparing my second book and will not hesitate to use Trafford's services again.

--- Hank Hagquist, author of Big Jim's RC Motor Black Book
    ISBN 1-55369-086-9

"I had been thinking about writing an book and went to a few publishing classes. It seemed that many people have a passion about writing something, and then for someone to 'approve' what you have felt is wonderful all along. A friend pointed me to Trafford Publishing and I found them great to work with. My first book was so successful that I launched a second! Thanks Trafford, for making one of my life long dreams a reality!"

--- Buck Kalinowski, author of Cupid's Secret (ISBN 1-55212-406-1) and The Adventures of Arrow (ISBN 1-55369-595-X)

News flash: Cupid's Secret just passed the National Bestseller sales mark! Congratulations, Buck!

"Trafford is one of those few companies who make it a policy to promise a date for delivery then do their best to deliver earlier. And they succeeded many times, in my case. Great company, great product, great delivery, great people."

--- Fraser Smith, author of The Smith Manoeuvre
    ISBN 1-55369-641-7

"Anna, you and Carol have been very professional and efficient throughout this whole publication process, even considering my special requests. And not a single misrepresentation by Trafford. Very professional, the kind of thing this world needs more of."

--- Dale Kelly, author of Fairness: A New Basis for Civilization
    ISBN 1-55395-142-5

"My name is Gregory Wilkey and I have recently published a novel for young readers, Royal Trouble in the Animal Kingdom, through Trafford Publishing. I have only one thing to say... THANK YOU! You have helped a struggling writer fulfil his dream of seeing one of his stories in print. I am currently working on the sequel and I look forward to publishing it with Trafford's help. Thank you to all those responsible for the success of my book. I have already sold many copies and I have two book signings lined up!!"

--- Gregory Wilkey, author of Royal Trouble in the Animal Kingdom
    ISBN 1-55395-038-0

"I knew I had a good book with fresh, practical information and I had a publishing company with innovative technology -- not to mention the support of Jay Conrad Levinson -- behind me. What could a conventional publisher offer that was better?"

"With traditional publishing, I'd have to wait at least two years to see the book in print; with on-demand publishing we're ready to go in weeks."

"We have total editorial control and royalties are much higher this way. Since Jay and I will orchestrate much of the marketing, it seems right that we maximize our return on that effort."

--- Grant Hicks, co-author of Guerrilla Marketing for Financial Advisors: Secrets For Making Big Profits from your Financial Advisory Business
    ISBN 1-4120-0399-7

"On-Demand Publishing is perfect for guerrilla marketers, who have a strong do-it-yourself ethic and a desire to share their knowledge with as many people as possible. They are delighted with the flexibility and speed that it offers, allowing them to operate in a true guerrilla mode."

--- Jay Conrad Levinson, co-author of Guerrilla Marketing for Financial Advisors
    ISBN 1-4120-0399-7

Jay is the originator and author of "The Best-Selling Marketing Series of All Time" that began with Guerrilla Marketing (1984). With over 14 million copies of his books sold, translations into 39 languages, and a well-deserved reputation as one of the world's craftiest marketers, Jay Conrad Levinson could publish with any major publishing house in America. For the latest book in his series, he chose Trafford. Welcome aboard, Jay and Grant!
