This report is Volume 3 in a series of documents providing a content reference for the specification and transfer of geomatics data. In the broad field of geomatics, one of the limiting factors to the wide use of Geographic Information Systems has been the lack of widely applicable data specifications. This current work and its companion volumes describe set specifications appropriate for geomatics data management and data sharing.

The content series defines the features and attributes, as related to topographic data, cadastral data, forestry data, soils data, and a variety of other themes.

This manual of specifications represents the culmination of some three years of testing and applied application. These specifications represent a significant step in the Province of British Columbia toward the standardization of cartographic representation as indicated by the acceptance of the "Map Representational File" depiction standards.

Adoption of the Canadian Council on Surveying and Mapping (CCSM) feature codes has set the stage for this development and will assure unique feature codes for all mapped features in British Columbia. As well, there must be development of specifications for the thematic aspects of geo-referenced data and its associated data bases. Work is now in progress toward that objective. The increased demand for usable digital data from different sources to be integrated in Geographic Information Systems will force an adoption of common standards of accuracy, data structure, storage and transfer formats and cartographic representation by data producers. The British Columbia Specifications and Guidelines for Geomatics represent recognition of this fact and a positive step in that direction.
