About the Author

Larry Schlauger is a native of Grand Junction, Colorado, where he lived until 1980. He then lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for sixteen years. In 1997, he moved back to his hometown. He has had various experiences, lived a somewhat wild life from youth to the recent past, and is intimate with the feel of the Western Colorado area. Larry is a prolific writer and is also a poet with several hundred poems to his credit.

The scenery of the Grand Valley and surrounding mountains is unique, almost surreal, and Larry describes it with accuracy and a fresh voice. River Eyes is an unusual story and has not been told before. Characters, locale, and the drama itself, are rendered with his personal style and take on life.

Chapter 1

Swollen to deep blue, the clouds churned over the gray-shale mountain to the North. Seconds apart, thunder boomers drum rolled bass, grew louder with tension, then peaked into the wicked cymbal crash that sends small children to comforts under the bed. Lightning bolts danced over the forty miles of jagged cliffs, some skipping into the desert gullies below and lighting the vast valley like a stadium.

A red sandstone mountain was showcased to the South. Spectral monoliths and their shadows were highlighted in the canyon floors by the renegade flashes. To the East, a hulking blue mesa loomed intermittently bright. Noise, light and the outlines of immense shapes enveloped the entire valley. The working men and women of Grand Junction, Colorado, cussed the late hour, the sleepless night ahead and any dog not too scared to bark.

Along the north bank of the Colorado River, not much more than ten miles west of the growing city and just below the willow brush line, a china saucer with cup rested on the coarse sand. Their intricate pattern was resplendently illuminated by frequent lightning strikes. The liquid in the gold-laced cup rippled when the thunder scored. Two eyes with deep-green irises floated in that cup of blood, rolling over each other in a lazy parody of the clouds rumbling above the still mountains. Alternately they positioned themselves toward, without seeing, the void.
